Our Range of Proteaceae. This family of remarkable exotic plants, home to the famous King Protea (Protea cynaroides), comprises around 1,700 species spread across more than 80 genera. These plants, primarily native to the southern hemisphere (Australia, South Africa, South America), include bushes, trees, and undershrubs. Among the most well-known are the Protea or proteas, shrubs or small trees originating from Africa. The Banksias (including the Banksia integrifolia), another iconic member of the family, are recognized by their cylindrical floral spikes in vibrant colors ranging from yellow to orange. The Leucadendron, with its colorful bracts, offers a beautiful diversity of hues, from yellow to red, while the Leucospermum, nicknamed "pincushion," produces spherical flowers with thread-like petals resembling pins. In 'Carnival red', they are a striking red. The Grevilleas are evergreen shrubs known for their original, spider-like flower clusters, often red or pink. Another commonly cultivated genus of Proteaceae in gardens is the Telopea. Native to Australia, this genus is famous for its large, showy inflorescences, usually red or pink, grouped in a dome shape. The most well-known species, Telopea speciosissima, also called "Waratah," is highly prized for its spectacular flowers.
Proteaceae require delicate cultivation. These plants thrive in well-drained, slightly acidic soil and full sun exposure. They are relatively drought-resistant once established but need regular watering in their early years. However, be cautious, as these plants are sensitive to excess water and soils too rich in nitrogen and phosphorus. They are suited to mild climates and do not tolerate heavy frosts well.
