Our Alpinia range. Like the famous Greater Galangal, these are tropical, ornamental, aromatic perennial plants. Alpinia galanga is very vigorous and prized for its fragrant rhizome with peppery notes, used in Asian cuisine. Alpinia zerumbet 'Variegata', or shell ginger, is captivating with its variegated evergreen foliage, as well as its pinkish-white flower clusters marked with yellow and red. Alpinia purpurata, the red ginger, with its floral spikes of red or pink bracts, is a lovely exotic plant to grow indoors.
Alpinia plants love warmth and humidity, just like their ginger cousins. They thrive in tropical climates or greenhouses and can be grown in pots in temperate climates. Plant them in rich, moist, well-drained soil, in partial shade or gentle sun. Maintain regular watering, especially during dry periods.
