Description

The Peperomia obtusifolia 'USA' is a cultivar with succulent and variegated foliage featuring waxy, thick, elliptical green leaves on sturdy stems. This variety displays an irregular cream-white variegation along the leaf edges. It forms a small, upright, bushy plant that is undemanding in respect of its growing conditions, which produces small greenish-white flowers on spikes though it is primarily cultivated for its foliage. Provide it with bright, indirect light for best results, though it also tolerates moderate light.

Belonging to the Piperaceae family, the genus Peperomia comprises around 1,700 species typically producing a thick, fleshy foliage. These plants are native to Central and South America as well as Asia, with some found as far north as Florida. They naturally grow in tropical understorey environments, thriving in soft light and high humidity, often as epiphytes or among rocks. The Peperomia obtusifolia 'USA' is an ornamental cultivar derived from the Peperomia obtusifolia species or Baby Rubber Plant native to an expanse from Florida to tropical America, and widespread in humid tropical regions. It develops dark green, succulent, glossy leaves on thick, upright stems forming a compact and robust habit. These fleshy leaves are adapted to storing water, helping the plant withstand occasional dry spells. Typically, it does not exceed 30 to 40 cm in height with a similar spread. The 'USA' differs from the species by its cream-white-edged leaves.
The name 'Peperomia' comes from the Greek words 'peperi' (pepper) and 'homoios' (resembling). This etymology highlights the plant's connection to the Piperaceae family which also includes black pepper (Piper nigrum).

The Peperomia obtusifolia 'USA' can be placed on a shelf alongside Calatheas or less humidity-demanding Philodendrons, or more simply, with a ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia). It thrives in standard household humidity without requiring misting; allow the soil to dry out between waterings.

Maintenance and care

Water once a week when the compost is dry, and empty the saucer. In winter, reduce the watering frequency.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 to 3 years, in spring
A mix designed for succulents or a standard potting mix with added perlite works perfectly. This helps prevent excess moisture from accumulating around the roots and reduces the risk of root rot. Ensure a drainage layer at the bottom of the pot to avoid water stagnation.
Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser (NPK 10-10-10) monthly during the growth period (spring and summer).

Houseplant care

Potential issues arise from overwatering or poor drainage (soft or yellow leaves).

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug infestation, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in soapy water and isolate the plant until the parasitic pests disappear. If red spider mites attack, shower the plant several times.
