Description

The Chlorophytum comosum ‘Irish’ is a beautiful variety of variegated spider plant. Its long, arching green leaves edged with white form a lovely soft; trailing, elegant, and bright clump. With its cascading appearance, it's perfect for dressing up a shelf or a hanging basket. This variety fits wonderfully into contemporary, bohemian, or natural interiors. It is one of the easiest plants to care for, ideal for those new to indoor gardening.

The Chlorophytum comosum 'Irish', commonly known as spider plant or ribbon plant, belongs to the Asparagaceae family. This herbaceous perennial is characterised by a dense rosette habit, forming a clump of ribbon-like leaves 20 to 60 cm long and 2 to 4 cm wide, with a glossy texture. The slightly arched leaves give the plant a trailing and elegant appearance, perfect for hanging displays or high shelves. The 'Irish' cultivar is known for its shorter and wider foliage than average and its unique reverse variegation. The growth of this plant is rapid, reaching a height of 25 to 30 cm and a spread of up to 50 cm at maturity. During summer, it produces small star-shaped white flowers of about 1 cm in diameter carried on long stalks. These inflorescences give rise to plantlets, or 'babies' which root easily, facilitating the plant's propagation.

Native to South Africa, Chlorophytum comosum grows naturally in tropical and subtropical forests, often in the shade of trees, where it benefits from high ambient humidity and mild temperatures. Introduced to Europe in the 19th century, it has since become a popular houseplant due to its hardiness and adaptability.

When grown indoors, the Chlorophytum 'Irish' prefers bright, indirect light, though it tolerates low-light conditions. Direct sunlight may cause the leaves to yellow. It thrives in temperatures between 18 and 24°C and dislikes overly dry air. Regular watering is recommended, allowing the substrate to dry slightly between waterings to prevent root rot. A well-draining potting mix is essential for optimal growth.

Chlorophytum comosum is renowned for its air-purifying properties, particularly its ability to absorb pollutants such as formaldehyde and xylene from indoor air, thereby helping to improve ambient air quality.

The Chlorophytum comosum ‘Irish’ is a versatile, decorative ally that easily will fit into any bright room, whether kitchen, bathroom, living room, or conservatory. Its trailing habit will enhance wall shelves, hanging baskets, or a stylish ceramic pot placed on a low table. Perfect for a bohemian chic, minimalist, or even urban jungle style, it adds a light and lively botanical touch.
Hang it alongside the long climbing stems of a Monstera or a Philodendron incensi, for example.

Maintenance and care

Water moderately, approximately once a week. Allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. In winter, reduce the frequency to avoid excess water.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot the young plant every 2 to 3 years, preferably in spring. The Chlorophytum has a vigorous root system that can quickly fill the pot, requiring a larger container.
Use a mixture of houseplant compost with clay pebbles to improve drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for houseplants (NPK 10-10-10) every 2 to 3 weeks in spring and summer. Reduce the application in autumn and stop it in winter.

Houseplant care

This plant does not shed many leaves and its foliage does not leave sticky residue. A regular wipe with a damp cloth is enough to remove dust and maintain the shine of its foliage.
The Chlorophytum does not require specific pruning, but you can trim dry or damaged leaves at their base to maintain a neat and tidy appearance. Also remove spent flower stems to encourage leaf growth.

Disease and pest advice

If mealybugs appear, clean the leaves with a soft cloth soaked in soapy water, then rinse with clean water. To prevent red spider mites, mist the foliage occasionally to maintain good humidity.
