Description

Discover this Collection of 3 different varieties of aubrietas with vibrant colours, among the most floriferous. These small perennial plants with evergreen leaves morph into joyfully blooming carpets between April and May. They withstand cold winters and require very little water in summer. A classic in rock gardens, you can also plant them above walls, in the crevices of old walls, along paths or as ground covers. They grow in the sun in well-drained soils, even those containing limestone, and require little maintenance.

The collection includes 5 young plants:

- x 2 Aubrieta 'Cascade Blue': a variety bearing lilac-blue flowers with a white centre.

- x 1 Aubrieta 'Fiona': a variety with white flowers and yellow stamens.

- x 2 Aubrieta 'Cascade Red': a variety with bright pinkish-red flowers that become purplish before fading.

Aubrietas are best planted in any well-drained soil, in a sunny exposure, or in a pot on a terrace where it can cover the base of taller plants. Hybrid aubrietas form cushions not exceeding 15 cm (6in) in height, but they spread quite rapidly over a diameter of 60 cm (24in). Plant them 40 cm (16in) apart to achieve a beautiful coverage in 2-3 years. Their small semi-evergreen to evergreen leaves, depending on the climate, are slightly silver-green. In summer, the foliage sometimes turns yellow, without affecting the health of the plants, and becomes green again with the first rain.

The aubrietas in this collection create pretty spots and beautiful streaks of colours, like an Impressionist painting. They colonise the ground quite quickly, which allows you to plant them on a sunny slope. Between paving joints, in the crevices of old walls, these little perennials are fabulous. They also work well in balcony planters and hanging baskets, as their stems will cascade over the edges to hide containers. To accompany them, consider, for example, Spanish thrift (Armeria) or basket-of-gold (Alyssum).

Planting and care

Aubrietas are relatively short-lived perennials. To overcome this problem, take cuttings of the plant every 2 or 3 years, or divide the rhizomatous stump every 2 or 3 years. It thrives in the sun, in light, well-drained soils that don't get too dry, even those that contain limestone. In case of prolonged drought, it is necessary to water to ensure the foliage remains green. This hardy little plant has no other requirements.
