Description

We offer you this White and Blue Liriope Duo, ideal for creating an elegant ground cover that is 30cm (12in) tall, attractive all year round and low maintenance. Liriope muscari is a hardy rhizomatous perennial plant that colonizes the soil over time. It forms a tight clump of narrow foliage, with a shiny dark green colour reminiscent of grasses. From late summer to autumn, depending on the climate, upright clusters of tiny bell-shaped flowers appear among the leaves. This duo will elegantly adorn the base of trees, borders, and pots, in well-drained soil, in full sun, partial shade, and even in dry shade.

The collection consists of:

x 1 Liriope muscari: the botanical species, with bluish-violet flower spikes

x 1 Liriope muscari 'Monroe White': a variety with pure white flowering

Liriope muscari are robust and tolerant shade perennials, capable of adapting to very dry conditions once well-established in soil rich in compost or humus. They will be more demanding when planted in full sun. Mix the varieties in this duo, plan for 6 plants to cover 1m² within 3 or 4 years. Plant them every 40cm (16in) along a partially shaded path, at the base of a hedge, or under lightly foliaged large trees, and your liriopes will form a consistently neat carpet. These plants are resilient and dense enough to discourage "weeds". They are so accommodating that they forgive neglectful watering and thrive in gardens without gardeners or weekend gardens.

Planting and care

Liriope muscari are shade perennials that prefer non-calcareous, well-drained soils that are not too dry, enriched with humus provided by the dead leaves of deciduous trees or bushes under which they thrive. However, they are tolerant plants capable of adapting to much drier conditions once established. These perennials are more water-demanding in full sun. Their roots suffer from stagnant moisture in winter, so it will be necessary to ensure good drainage in very clayey soil that becomes waterlogged in winter. In early spring, remove damaged leaves before the annual regrowth. Liriope does not require any particular maintenance once established: water regularly in the first year, especially if the summer is dry. Afterwards, it will manage on its own.
