My plants have arrived well, but the white forsythia arrived in small pieces with broken branches... The hellebore and the pieris, on the other hand, are in good shape.

Description

The Korean white Forsythia or Abeliophyllum distichum is a low-growing bush. This shrub has the distinctiveness of flowering at the end of winter, in February-March, on the previous year's branches and before the appearance of foliage. The small bell-shaped flowers, grouped in numerous clusters, consist of 4 petals and give off an almond scent. Measuring 1.5 cm (0.6 in) in diameter, they are white with a yellow-orange heart. They turn light brown at the end of flowering.

The Korean Abelia is melliferous. Its foliage is deciduous. Dark green in colour, it becomes purple-red in autumn. The leaves measure 8 cm (3.1 in) long. They are arranged in two rows, hence the name distichum, from the Greek 'dis' two and 'stikhos' row. The white Forsythia grows slowly and can reach 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in) in all directions. It is very hardy and originates from South Korea.

The Abeliophyllum distichum thrives well as a low hedge due to its small size. It also grows particularly well when trained against a wall. It can fit well in the front of a border. Cut some branches in early December and place them in a vase, they will be in bloom for Christmas.

Planting and care

The White Korean Forsythia thrives in full sun or partial shade, sheltered from cold winds. You can train it against a wall, where it will be at its best. Cultivate it in a well-drained, dry to moist soil. It is very tolerant and can thrive in both poor and rich soil. It does not like excessive moisture. In April-May, after flowering, prune all branches to ¼ of their length so that the plant produces new shoots at the base. The young bush can be quite weak, which is why it needs to be taken care of.
