A little disappointed with its pruning despite purchasing it in a 7-litre pot. Would have preferred it to be taller. However, it has taken well and bears good fruit. That's what I expected to feed the birds when the snow arrives.

Description

Malus x zumi 'Golden Hornet' is an ornamental apple tree with white flowers followed in late summer by magnificent very bright golden-yellow fruits.

A medium-sized shrub, 'Golden Hornet' has a rounded habit and can reach a height of 4 m to 5 m (13.1 ft to 16.4 m). It maintains a balanced shape without the need for pruning.

Flowering in the form of pink buds is followed by pure white flowers grouped in a multitude of small clusters from April. Its foliage is deciduous. The leaves are ovate, alternate and dentate, dark green, and turn orange-yellow in autumn.

In autumn, the shrub produces miniature golden-yellow apples, with a diameter of 3 cm (1.2 in). Highly appreciated by birds, these cherry-sized fruits remain attached to the shrub for half of the winter.

Malus x zumi 'Golden Hornet' is a very good pollinator for early flowering fruit trees. It will thrive in all types of soil, preferably fertile and rich, well-drained, with a sunny exposure.

This cultivar requires little maintenance and is highly resistant to diseases.
