Neckfontaine (Belgium)
Hello, I grow agapanthus at my home in Belgium. To achieve beautiful successive flowerings on the same plant, it is important to avoid using fertilizers that are too high in nitrogen, such as abundant manure, as this will mainly promote excessive foliage growth. In spring, an organic fertilizer like "rose fertilizer" (rich in potassium "K") should be applied, and a second time in summer. If the plant becomes too large, it can be divided after flowering. The stems are separated at the root ball using a sharp blade. The wounds are exposed to the sun for an hour to promote proper healing. Then, the new plants are placed in a new pot, not too wide, as agapanthus thrive when confined. The soil should consist of 1/3 good garden soil, 1/3 high-quality universal potting soil, and 1/3 Rhine sand (0.5). The pots should be placed in a sunny location during summer and watered regularly, especially in hot and dry weather. Through this division, the agapanthus can live for several decades. As for deciduous agapanthus (which loses its leaves in autumn), they should be stored in a garage or shed protected from frost, and the root ball should be kept slightly moist. For evergreen agapanthus, they should spend the winter in full light in a cool room (minimum 5°C (41°F)) and should be watered sparingly.
