Description

Actinidia pilosula, or ornamental kiwi, is cultivated for its remarkable foliage, which is naturally variegated and its very pretty flowering.

Appreciated above all for its unique foliage, this climber has green leaves, gradually turning cream white in spring.  It reaches 5 to 6 m (16 to 20ft) in height.

Its pink bombom flowers bloom from May to June, sometimes followed by small edible but bland kiwis. Hardy, this ornamental kiwi can stay in the ground in winter, provided it is in a south or west facing position and mulched in winter.

Actinidia pilosula can be planted against a wall, at the foot of a large tree or on a large pergola. During the first two years, help it cling to its support, then it will climb on its own.

Planting and care

Actinidia pilosula is sensitive to severe frosts: it prefers a sheltered location, and a rich and well-drained soil, neutral or acidic (it does not appreciate limestone soils). Mulch it in autumn. In the case of a harsh winter, prune it severely in spring. Fairly demanding, it appreciates the addition of organic fertilisers in spring. It does not require pruning. However, in autumn, you can shorten new growth of the year by about one third. To encourage the appearance of pink and white leaves in spring, you can plant it in bright but indirect sunlight.
