I am a little disappointed with this plant, of which I am attaching a photo. It was delivered well packaged and in good condition, and it is thriving on my east-facing balcony in Paris with no shade until late morning. As you can see in the photo I wish to add (if the technical means allow! ????), it is doing well. However, the leaves are not at all two-tone or variegated, as described by Promesse de fleurs. They are a beautiful chartreuse colour that contrasts with the red flowers, but it's not what I was hoping for. I'm not sure if this is due to the orientation of my balcony, which is sunny, or the Parisian climate. Either way, I am a little disappointed. It seems impossible to upload the photo. What a shame!

Description

Pelargonium 'Crystal Palace Gem' is a very old variety of zonal geranium. It is still highly regarded for its striking salmon-red flowers, which stand out beautifully against variegated foliage of chartreuse green and medium green. Blooming from spring to autumn, it forms 60cm (24in) tall bushes that are full of health. A reliable choice, ideal for small gardens, hanging baskets, and planters.

Zonal pelargoniums are perennial hybrids from the geranium family, gathered in a large group known as Pelargonium x hortorum. They are mostly derived from P. inquinans, native to the southeastern tip of Africa, with contributions from P. zonale and P. frutetorum. 'Crystal Palace Gem' was obtained in 1869 and has since enjoyed enduring success. It forms a bushy clump with a fairly rounded habit and vigorous growth. It reaches a minimum size of 60cm (24in) in all directions. It blooms from spring to autumn, producing consistently showy, slightly fragrant, medium-sized single flowers in small clusters. They do not turn pink as they age, contrasting nicely with the variegated medium green foliage bordered in yellow-green. Its sturdy and succulent stems bear circular, undulate, villous, dentate leaves with a thick texture. The foliage is very healthy.

Once reserved for balconies and patios, zonal pelargoniums are now making a noticeable entrance into sunny flower beds and borders. Plant them en masse to create a lasting and vibrant display throughout summer. These plants tolerate drought quite well, making them perfect companions for garden verbenas, blue lobelias, and black or purple-foliaged ipomoeas (Ipomoea Illusion Midnight Lace, Ipomoea Sweet Heart 'Purple'). Create beautiful pots and hanging baskets by combining them with bright pink or red varieties, Million Bells, variegated periwinkles, Dichondra 'Silver Falls', violets, and calibrachoas.

Planting and care

Zonal geraniums thrive in fertile, well-drained, neutral to alkaline, well-loosened soils. They prefer full sun. Geraniums are hungry plants that require regular applications of fertiliser to give their best.

You can plant pelargoniums as early as March-April in mild climate regions, but they will need to be brought indoors in case of frost. To avoid any danger, wait until the risk of frost has passed before placing them outside. When planting in pots or containers, use special geranium compost.

In the garden, wait until the end of April, or even mid-May, to plant them in the ground. Add a special geranium growing support to your soil.
