Absolutely stunning: more burgundy than in the photo and with more contrast in the lower petals, almost white-pink in mine. 2 flowers on very tall and upright stems, without leaves. It made quite an impression!!!

Description

The Amaryllis Bogota, also known as Hippeastrum Cybister, is an indoor bulb, with a spectacular flowering period from December to March.

Its flowers are star-shaped, with long, narrow petals measuring 10 cm (4in). The flowers are salmon and red in colour. In the heart of the flower, there are long stamens that sometimes exceed the petals. 4 to 6 flowers are perched on robust stems.

The Amaryllis Bogota develops its foliage after flowering. This indoor bulb can reach 50 cm (20in). Cultivate it in a pot. You can also place it against a well-exposed wall in your garden, sheltered from cold winds, knowing that amaryllis cannot tolerate frost. When cut, the flowers make beautiful bouquets.

Planting and care

The Amaryllis Bogota thrives in full sun or partial shade in any moist soil. Indoors, place it in bright light. For pot cultivation, allow 2 cm (1in) around the bulb and use a heavy pot to prevent it from tipping under the weight of the Amaryllis, which tends to lean towards the sun. Use a light, well-draining soil, either neutral or slightly acidic. In a pot, leave half of the bulb above the soil to prevent the neck from staying wet and rotting from watering. It also provides more space for the soil. Plant your Amaryllis bulbs from October to January, depending on the desired flowering period, bearing in mind that there should be a 6-week gap between planting and flowering. After flowering, cut off the flowers and let the foliage grow. At the end of summer, allow the soil to dry out and trim off the dry leaves. 6 weeks later, repot the bulb in fresh soil.
