Collection items (10 plants)

Description

This is a collection of 10 varieties of dwarf shrubs, not exceeding 1m (3ft) in height, interesting for their flowering, foliage or colourful wood. Undemanding, requiring little maintenance, they are perfect for easily creating a low, multicoloured and flowering hedge, decorative for a good part of the year, well suited for borders and small gardens. Delivered in a kit of 10 plants in pots. This collection of dwarf shrubs allows you to create about 10m (33ft) of hedge at a lower cost.

The collection consists of:

Buddleia Blue Chip - Butterfly Bush well dense, 1m (3ft) in all directions, bearing pretty spikes of beautiful blue-mauve flowers, fragrant, very popular with butterflies. Its deciduous foliage falls in autumn.

- 1 Cornus sericea Kelseyi - Red Osier Dogwood : deciduous, about 75cm (30in) in height and 1m (3ft) in width. Its habit is creeping, its foliage light green turns yellow-orange in autumn before falling, revealing its reddish-brown branches, which are very decorative in winter. Flowers in flattened cymes of yellowish-white flowers are not very visible and are followed by white berries.

- 1 Deutzia gracilis Nikko - Slender Deutzia : 50cm (20in) to 1m (3ft) in height and 60cm (24in) in spread. This small spreading shrub blooms in May-June, producing clusters of multiple bell-shaped flowers in pure white, more or less fragrant. Its deciduous foliage is silver-green during flowering and turns wine-red in autumn before falling.

- 1 Euonymus fortunei Emerald'n gold - Spindle Tree : about 60cm (24in) in height and 90cm (35in) in spread, spreading and bushy. Its attractive variegated foliage of bright green and golden yellow persists in winter. Flowering from May-June to August, in cymes of small white flowers is followed by spherical white fruits containing orange seeds.

- 1 Lavandula angustifolia Hidcote - Lavender : a shrub of 60cm (24in) in all directions, with evergreen and silvery-green aromatic foliage, ornamental even in winter. In summer, this lavender is covered with a multitude of highly scented dark violet flowers carried by short cylindrical spikes.

- 1 Hypericum Hidcote - St. John's Wort : does not exceed 1.50m (5ft) in all directions, usually 1m (3ft). Beautiful dark blue-green foliage, more or less evergreen depending on the severity of the winter. This shrub provides a long flowering period from July to October, in successive waves, with cup-shaped flowers of bright golden yellow.

- 1 Potentilla fruticosa Red Ace - Shrubby Cinquefoil : about 55cm (22in) in height and 90cm (35in) in spread. It forms a beautiful abundantly flowering dome from June to the end of summer. The deciduous foliage, absent in winter, is both fine and dense, with an ash-blue-green colour, highlighting a generous bicoloured flowering, with small cups of vermilion-red flowers with orange reverses.

- 1 Spiraea betulifolia Tor - Birchleaf Spirea : about 80cm (32in) in all directions. Massive spring flowering in corymbs of small white flowers that butterflies love. Its deciduous foliage, dark green with a hint of blue, turns flamboyant colours in autumn before falling.

- 1 Spiraea japonica Little Princess - Japanese Spirea : about 40cm (16in) in height and 70cm (28in) in spread. Forming a spreading and dense dome, this adorable shrub is adorned with small deciduous foliage of fresh green and offers a soft pink flowering in summer, particularly abundant, in the form of corymbs that transform the plant into a large flower cushion. Its foliage falls in autumn.

- 1 Viburnum davidii - David's Viburnum : about 1m (3ft) in height and 1.10m (4ft) in spread. Beautiful evergreen foliage in winter, shiny dark green, highlighted by the red hues of the petioles. Flowering in June: the rather inconspicuous flowers are slightly scented, followed by highly ornamental, blue and shiny fruits, carried by red peduncles, persisting for a long time on the shrub.

Plant these shrubs in autumn or spring, in full sun or partial shade, mixing them and spacing them 80cm (32in) to 1m (3ft) apart. Plant them in ordinary soil, but well-drained and well-prepared, improved with leaf compost. Varied and mixed hedges require little or no pruning, in order to enjoy the flowers and fruits. This low hedge only requires minimal maintenance, which consists of light pruning in late winter or late summer.

Planting and care

Plant this collection in the sun or partial shade, in ordinary but well-prepared soil, enriched with leaf compost, that is rather moist but well-drained. Dig planting holes of 30-40 cm (12-16in) in all directions, thoroughly loosening the bottom and walls with a fork or pickaxe. Maintain a planting distance of 80 cm (32in) to 1 m (3ft) between each bush. Easy to grow and not very demanding, these shrubs only require mulching in summer in dry climates to maintain some moisture, at least during the first summers after planting. Water them abundantly in the first few years in the case of pronounced drought (15-20 litres of water each time), but keep waterings spaced out. You can prune the longest branches to help your shrubs branch out.
