More information

A variety of almost fluorescent blue-tinged red. The central disk is brown and the ligulate flowers that surround it are rigid, arranged horizontally, giving a cheerful look to a flower that is already decidedly optimistic. Solid and resistant, this ligulate forms a well-ramified clump of flowers from July to September. To be planted in the sun, in well-drained soil, in flower beds, borders, and pots.

Description

Echinacea Sun Magic® 'Vintage Ruby' is a variety of Echinacea with particularly vibrant and joyful red flowers. This is due to its almost fluorescent pink-red colour as well as its straight, horizontally positioned petals. Very floriferous, this selection produces 25 to 30 flowers per plant during the summer and into early autumn on sturdy, well-branched stems, ideal in flower beds, sunny borders, or flowering pots that it enlivens from the first year.

Echinacea purpurea 'Vintage Ruby' belongs to the Asteraceae family. It is a horticultural creation resulting, among others, from Echinacea purpurea, native to the western United States, from Georgia to Michigan, passing through Oklahoma and Ohio. 'Vintage Ruby' has a solid, bushy, upright, and dense habit, reaching 60cm (24in) in height and 45cm (18in) in width. The lanceolate, opposite green leaves are covered in rough hairs. The flowering period extends from July to September, and the flowers are slightly fragrant and highly visited by butterflies. The branched flower stalks are topped with a solitary head, measuring 10 to 12cm (4 to 5in) in diameter, with a disc surrounded by a collar of horizontal or slightly drooping ligules in a bright pinkish-red color. The fruit is an achene that releases seeds which birds find delicious. This plant firmly and deeply anchors itself in the soil, thanks to its highly developed root system.

Echinacea 'Vintage Ruby' is a highly resistant plant that adapts to difficult conditions, occasionally tolerating intense heat, humidity, and drought. Its remarkably colourful flowering brings dynamism and cheerfulness to flower beds. Combine it with flowers of similar colours but different shapes, such as daylilies, Monardas. Its warm colours are beautifully accompanied by the golden or pink spikes of ornamental grasses like Stipa tenuifolia, Schizachyrium scoparium, or Muhlenbergia capillaris. Its vibrant pairing with another foliage plant, Alchemilla mollis, is superb. Lastly, it brightens up fresh or dried flower bouquets.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible, in pots, containers, or directly in flower beds.

Planting and care

Plant them in a fresh and deep, well-worked soil, in a sunny location. These vigorous plants are greedy and will thrive better if you regularly provide them with a good fertilizer. Cut back faded flowers at the end of summer to avoid invasive seedlings.

Echinaceas dread waterlogged soils in winter. The soil should be deep and loose to accommodate their root system. Cut back faded flowers as they appear. Divide the clump when flowering slows down. Mulch the base in May to keep it cool in summer, as it fears water shortage during flowering.
