Description

Trifolium repens 'Dark Debbie' is a variety of ornamental clover which is an almost black shade. Very dark and decorative, its rounded leaves are almost entirely black, highlighted by a contrasting bright green border. Easy to care for, hardy and easy to grow, it forms a decorative groundcover, ideal for borders or pots. It prefers a sunny location where its colours are more intense and a moist to wet soil. It briefly blooms in the summer, in the form of white-greenish oval spikes. Simply avoid planting it with plants with delicate root systems, as it can be a bit suffocating. Take advantage of its intense and sophisticated colour by planting it with brightly coloured perennial flowers.

Clovers belong to the large family Fabaceae. The genus Trifolium has nearly 200 species found on all continents, except Australia. T. repens is native and widespread throughout Europe, as well as in North America, except for boreal areas. This perennial adapts to all types of soils, even limestone and clay. 'Dark Debbie' is the darkest of ornamental clovers. The plant forms a very dense and spreading clump, 10 to 20 cm (4 to 8in) tall, expanding over time through creeping stems that root at the nodes. The flowering, which is rather discreet, takes place in June-July. The pleasantly scented small flowers, about 1 cm (0.5 in) long, are white-greenish, sometimes pinkish, and are held upright in globular heads that later become oval-shaped at the end of the floral stems just above the foliage. The foliage, more or less evergreen, consists of leaves divided into 4 entire, rounded leaflets with dentate margins, red in colour with a tender green heart. The fruit is a pod containing seeds that easily self-sow in light soil.

Trifolium repens 'Dark Debbie' can be used as an ornamental groundcover in sunny pots, with annuals or taller perennials, to showcase colourful flowers. In the garden, it is very useful as a groundcover to reduce weeding, as it grows on its own and only needs rainwater, making it ideal for difficult-to-access areas. It can also be a good substitute for a lawn in less trafficked areas. In pots, regular watering is necessary. Its natural charm works wonders in borders and rustic flower beds, paired with perennial flowers in shades of red, green, and purple. Avoid pairing it with less vigorous perennials, such as alpine plants, as it will dominate them.
