Description

The Veronica longifolia collection, dedicated to Long-leaved Veronicas, includes three different varieties: the species called Veronica longifolia, accompanied by its varieties 'Charlotte' and 'Marietta'. These speedwells differ in the colour of their melliferous flowers, their height, and their flowering period. They are very hardy perennial plants with evergreen foliage. They thrive in rich and moist soil. They are beautiful border plants and excellent candidates for enhancing wet and clayey areas.

The collection consists of:

x 1 Veronica longifolia: this is the botanical species with intense blue-violet flowers, flowering from June to July. Reaching a height of about 70 cm (28in), its floral spikes form a beautiful contrast to its dark green persistent leaves.

x 1 Veronica longifolia 'Charlotte': this variety is distinguished by its delicate white flowers and moderate height, 60 cm (24in). Its flowering period extends from June to August. Beautiful green foliage, highlighted by a fine white border.

x 1 Veronica longifolia 'Marietta': this speedwell bears clear tropical blue flowers between July and August. It reaches a height of 40 to 50 cm (16 to 20in).

These Long-leaved Speedwells should be planted in spring or autumn in rich soil that remains moist in summer. We recommend planting Veronica longifolia 'Charlotte' in the foreground, while the species and the 'Marietta' varieties can be placed slightly behind. Allow for 4 to 5 plants per square metre, with an approximate spacing of 60 cm (24in) between each plant.

Create beautiful summer displays with these perennial Speedwells, especially on the banks of a pond. Plant them in front of a combination of Thalictrum delavayi 'Hewitt's Double' with double flowers, Eupatorium coelestinum with mauve pompoms, and Filipendula rubra 'Venusta', a queen-of-the-meadow offering magnificent pink floral spikes. For a wilder style, you can combine these perennials in the background of a border with Miscanthus sinensis 'Gracillimus', which will bring a touch of elegance with its fine leaves and light inflorescent plumes.

Pairing them with the perpetual old rose 'Cornelia' will create a very elegant combination, offering a contrast of colours and shapes between the delicate roses and the spikes of the speedwells, while adding a romantic dimension to your garden.

Planting and care

The Veronica longifolia is an easy-going perennial that prefers a rich and light soil with a basic (limestone) tendency. It enjoys moist settings and the proximity of water, but requires fairly light, not too compact soil. It will develop and flower best in sunny exposures. The Veronica longifolia can be planted in the garden almost any time of the year, except during periods of frost and summer drought. Cut the faded flower stems to promote new flowering. Adding compost at the base of the plant every spring will gives it vigour. Avoid using over-nitrogen-rich fertilisers as they will weaken the growth and produce stems more prone to bending. In spring, prune the plant at the base. New foliage will emerge from the underground roots in spring.
