Description

A duo of small oak-leaved germanders composed of the wild Teucrium chamaedrys with pink flowers and its 'Alba' form with yellowish-white flowers. These are perennial plants with long summer flowering, from June to August. Their foliage is almost evergreen in winter. They can withstand temperatures as low as -15°C (5°F) and are perfectly adapted to very dry summers. Their vegetation usually reaches a height of 30 to 40cm (12 to 16in) and spreads on the ground over time. These germanders make excellent rockery plants and can be used to create beautiful borders without the need for watering.

The duo consists of:

1 x Teucrium chamaedrys: the species type with pink flowers. It usually grows to a height of 30 to 40cm (12 to 16in) and thrives particularly well in well-drained soils.

1 x Teucrium chamaedrys 'Alba': this variant is distinguished by its elegant and discreet white flowers with a touch of pale-yellow. Otherwise, it is identical to the wild species.

These two varieties of Teucrium chamaedrys should be planted in well-drained soils, even limestone, and in sunny to partially shaded locations. For optimal effect, plant about 6 to 9 plants per square metre and maintain a distance of at least 30cm (12in) between each plant.

This duo of teucriums combines perfectly with lavenders and creeping rosemary in a dry garden. Add some 'Elijah Blue' fescue grass for its striking silver-blue foliage. Finally, Sedum 'Autumn Joy', with its pink to reddish flowers in autumn, can bring a beautiful harmony of colours and textures to the ensemble.

Planting and care

Teucrium chamaedrys likes poor, even limestone soils that are well-drained or even dry. It also accepts any good garden soil, as long as it does not retain water, especially in winter. In fertile soil, it will be less perennial and show faster growth. In a warm climate, this germander tolerates partial shade very well. With very few exceptions, teucrium prefer rather dry, rocky and poor, limestone, well-drained soils, as well as full sun. In very clayey soils, it should be grown on a bank, along a wall, or in a rockery.
