Your article is serious and interesting. You don't mention the scab that my tree had this summer. I would have liked to know what caused it and how to fight against this disease. Thank you.

Description

The 'Jonagold' Apple Tree is a hardy, vigorous, and highly productive variety. It produces fruits with a diameter of 7.5 to 8cm (3in), with a light green to yellow skin striped with red. Their yellow flesh is crisp, juicy, sweet, and slightly acidic. Harvest takes place in October and the fruits can be stored in a cool place until January. The 'Jonagold' Apple Tree is not self-fertile and is not suitable for hot regions and oceanic climates.

The 'Jonagold' Apple Tree is a variety selected in 1953 at Cornell University in Geneva, USA. It is the result of a cross-breeding between 'Golden Delicious' and 'Jonathan'. It has been commercially available since 1968.

The 'Jonagold' Apple Tree is a semi-erect tree with an elegant and slender habit. It is highly productive, and thinning is essential at the start of fruiting to prevent small fruit size and the occurrence of diseases. Its foliage consists of large, ovate leaves, slightly fuzzy and greenish-brown on the upper side, whitish-green on the lower side, and deeply dentate. The flowering, in white-pink, occurs in mid-April. The flowering is not sensitive to frost, making the apple tree suitable for cultivation in all regions. Being self-sterile, the presence of apple trees with flowering at the same time is necessary. The varieties 'Starking Delicious', 'Melrose', 'Reine des Reinettes', and 'Ingrid Marie' are the most suitable. Fruiting is early, starting in September, and the fruits can be stored in a cool place (cellar or refrigerator) until January. The fruits, with a diameter of 7.5 to 8cm (3in), have a light green to yellow skin striped with red. Their yellow flesh is crisp, juicy, sweet, and slightly acidic.

These apples are particularly good for eating fresh or in pastries. They can also be used for making compotes, cooked dishes, jams, jellies, and in savoury dishes, especially in combination with Norman cheeses, for example.

Planting and care

Choose a well-sunny spot for your 'Jonagold' Apple Tree, the soil can be slightly chalky or acidic but not excessively so. Dig a large planting hole at least 3 times the volume of the root ball. Simultaneously add organic matter (topsoil, compost...) and a base fertilizer like crushed horn. Do not bury the graft union. Stake if necessary. Water generously, even in winter, even if it rains. Fruit trees are ideally planted between October and March, outside of the frost period. Container-grown plants can be planted all year round, except during periods of high heat or frost.

You can add a small handful of wood ash, rich in potash, during winter, this will improve fruiting. Watch out for potential aphid attacks during the season. A white powdery coating caused by a fungus, powdery mildew, may appear on the leaves in summer, but it does not harm fruit development in gardens. Harvest takes place in September. Only keep harvested fruits. Apples should be stored stalk down, on shelves or in crates. Choose a preferably completely dark, dry, cool location, but frost-free.

Care

Pruning instructions The pruning of your apple tree can be limited to a simple removal of dead or obstructive branches at the end of winter, in March. During the first 3 or 4 years, you can also encourage the formation of 4 or 5 main branches, resulting in a goblet-shaped habit, which is traditional in fruit tree cultivation. In any case, make sure to leave some spaces in the tree's structure for good air circulation and light. Don't hesitate to thin out fruit clusters in June. Removing some fruits relieves fragile branches and helps achieve a better size.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
