Description

The Angelonia angustifolia Archangel Cherry Red is part of a new line of angelonias selected for their excellent heat resistance and large flowers. This wonderful annual plant offers endless flowering from June to October, in long upright clusters adorned with beautiful red flowers that create a very decorative tuft. Angelonia is perfect in pots, containers, and hanging baskets, as well as in sunny borders with well-draining soil. It tolerates relative drought and requires little maintenance.

The Angelonia angustifolia Archangel Cherry Red is a plant from the scrophulariaceae family, just like snapdragons. Its wild ancestor is native to Mexico, Central America, and tropical South America. The apparent delicacy of this plant hides great robustness, as it tolerates relative drought when planted in the ground. This tender plant, perennial in its native lands, has given rise to numerous cultivars that share good heat tolerance and seem unattractive to insects and diseases. 'Archangel Cherry Red' grows into a 35-40 cm (14-16in) tuft in all directions when in bloom. The plant continuously produces upright flowering stems from June to October, adorned with numerous intensely red, dark-throated, two-lipped flowers. They resemble both small orchids and snapdragons. The flowers open above the foliage, composed of small, long, narrow, shiny green leaves that release an aromatic scent when crushed, arranged alternately on the stems. In regions with mild climates, Angelonia can self-seed in light soil.

The Angelonia Archangel Cherry Red is an essential terrace plant, easy to pair with other plants, ideal for quickly creating a summer setting. This plant is resistant to heat and rain. It is a good choice for flower beds, containers, and rock gardens. It looks fantastic in large floral arrangements, combined with dark-leaved petunias or ipomoeas, trailing geraniums, diascas, trailing verbenas, and many other sun-loving species. It also produces long-lasting cut flowers.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them in sheltered locations (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before placing them outdoors once the risk of frost is definitively eliminated.

Planting and care

Plant your Angelonia Archangel in a sunny or possibly semi-shaded position. They require a light, well-draining and humus-rich soil and appreciate fertilization. They tolerate rather dry soil quite well if planted in the ground (although flowering will be interrupted in case of excessively dry soil). You can plant your Angelonia in a pot or in the ground. In a pot, they need to be regularly watered. Regularly remove faded flowers, as this will promote the appearance of new flowers.

Attention, our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under shelter (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being installed outdoors once the risk of frost has definitively passed.
