Description

The seeds of Verbena 'Scentsation Mix' offer a blend of Verbena x hybrida with delightfully scented flowers. Their soft palette of colours combines shades of blue, pink, red, purple, and white, in a pastel harmony. This large-flowered Verbena is lovely in mixed-scented bouquets in the house, after adorning borders and pots. Vigorous, resistant, and floriferous, it enchants all summer.

Native to South America and belonging to the Verbenaceae family, Verbena x hybrida is, as its name suggests, the result of hybridisation. It bears finely cut flowers arranged in umbels, like small flat clusters measuring 6 to 8 cm (2 to 3in), with varying colours depending on the varieties. Its medium-green leaves are finely cut, sometimes lobed. It is a nectar-rich plant that butterflies love. The Scentsation Mix Verbena has a compact habit, reaching a height of 25 cm (10in) and a width of 30 cm (12in).

Verbenas are tender perennial plants, loved for their generous flowering and vibrant colours. Their lack of hardiness is largely compensated by their easiness to grow and the length of their flowering period, which extends from June to September. They are versatile and can be used in borders, flower beds, or even in pots where they are grown as annuals. You can easily associate them with Diascias, and Ornamental Tobacco in pots or flower beds. Garden Verbenas thrive in sunny locations with rich, well-drained soil. In pots, make sure not to apply too much nitrogen fertiliser, as it can promote foliage growth at the expense of flowers.

Easy to grow Garden Verbenas can occasionally be susceptible to fungal diseases (Mildew, Powdery Mildew), a nuisance that can be easily avoided by not planting them in confined areas and avoiding wetting their foliage during watering. It is also important to watch out for possible attacks from spider mites, thrips, and slugs. To encourage and support their long flowering, regularly remove faded flowers.

This care will be richly rewarded!

Planting and care

Sow from February to April, in a seed tray or directly in pots filled with a good seed compost kept slightly moist. Do not cover the seeds. Place the container in a well-lit, warm location, maintaining a temperature of 24-27°C (75.2-80.6°F). Germination usually takes 14 to 21 days. When the young plants are strong enough to handle, transplant if necessary into a pot and gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions before planting them in the garden with a spacing of 35 cm (14in).
