Description

Alocasia 'Bambino', also known as Elephant's Ear, is a compact houseplant, perfect for lovers of exotic foliage with limited space. This hybrid variety, derived from Alocasia amazonica, stands out for its narrow, arrow-shaped leaves, in a deep green with striking white veins. The undersides of the leaves, which display a purple hue, add an extra touch of elegance. Its modest size makes it an ideal choice for small interiors or confined spaces, whether in a minimalist decor or a jungle-themed setting. To encourage its growth, provide it with bright light, but avoid direct sunlight, and keep its soil slightly moist, without overwatering—achievable with a well-draining substrate.

Alocasia 'Bambino' belongs to the Araceae family. This plant has an upright habit, with sturdy stems supporting glossy, elongated leaves, measuring between 15 and 20 cm in length. Unlike some larger varieties of the Alocasia genus, 'Bambino' retains a compact size throughout its life, making it particularly well-suited for indoor cultivation. Its growth is relatively slow, reaching a height and spread of around 30 to 45 cm.

Native to the tropical undergrowth of Borneo, the botanical species from which it originates, Alocasia amazonica, grows naturally in rich, well-drained soil under dense, humid cover. These conditions explain its specific needs: filtered light, high humidity (around 60-70%), and a consistent temperature between 15 and 27°C. Its leaves and stems contain toxic compounds that may cause irritation if ingested.

Stunning yet sometimes challenging to acclimate in our homes, where the air is too dry, Alocasia roots are sensitive to both excess moisture and drought. To successfully cultivate the Alocasia 'Bambino', place it in a spot with bright, indirect light. Regular watering is essential, keeping the soil slightly moist but not waterlogged to prevent root rot.

Alocasia 'Bambino' pairs beautifully with tropical plants that thrive in bright light, such as Ficus elastica or Philodendron scandens, which add volume and complement its architectural foliage. It also works well with Anthuriums or Syngoniums, which similarly appreciate high humidity, creating a striking contrast in textures and colours.

Maintenance and care

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Remove yellowed, stained, or damaged leaves.

Disease and pest advice
