Description

Euphorbia mammillaris, also known as "Corn cob Cactus" or Corn Cob Euphorbia, is a succulent plant native to South Africa. Appreciated for its unique appearance resembling a corn cob, it features green cylindrical stems adorned with hexagonal tubercles arranged in vertical rows. This euphorbia is ideal as a houseplant. It requires little maintenance and has a strong personality!

Belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family, Euphorbia mammillaris is a succulent plant native to South Africa, specifically the Little Karoo region and the Cape Province. In its natural habitat, it thrives in thorny scrubland areas, often alongside other euphorbia species such as Euphorbia esculenta and Euphorbia ferox. This region has a semi-arid climate with low annual rainfall, which has led Euphorbia mammillaris to develop specific adaptations to survive drought conditions. It is a dioecious species: there are male and female plants. It forms a dwarf bush with a dense clump-like appearance. Its thick, erect, ribbed stems measure between 1.5 and 6 cm in diameter and can reach a height of 20 to 35 cm. The plant develops an equivalent width, reaching 35 cm in all directions at maturity. The stems feature 7 to 17 ribs, adorned with tightly packed hexagonal tubercles arranged in vertical rows. The thorns, though sparse and scattered, are thick, blunt, and whitish in colour; they grow up to 1 cm long. The small, ephemeral leaves appear at the top of the stems. The flowers, called cyathia, are solitary and yellow, located at the tip of each stem. Flowering occurs between late winter and early summer.

To grow Euphorbia mammillaris indoors, place it in a spot with bright light, ideally near a south- or west-facing window. Use a well-draining substrate, such as a cactus and succulent mix, to prevent water accumulation around the roots. Water moderately during the growing season (spring and summer), allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to prevent root rot. This plant prefers temperatures between 18°C and 24°C and cannot tolerate frost. Handle it with care, as the white sap it produces can cause skin irritation and is toxic if ingested.

Euphorbia mammillaris pairs perfectly with other succulents like Aloe, Haworthia, or Echeveria, which share the same light and well-draining soil requirements. For a striking effect, combine it with columnar cacti such as Cereus peruvianus or Euphorbia ingens to mix shapes and textures. It can be showcased in a mineral composition with decorative stones and sand, evoking its arid natural habitat.

Maintenance and care

Arrosez modérément en laissant le substrat sécher entre deux arrosages. En hiver, réduisez l'arrosage à une fois par mois. En été, ne laissez pas le substrat sécher complétement.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Disease and pest advice

En cas d'infestation de cochenilles, nettoyez délicatement les zones touchées avec un coton-tige imbibé d'alcool à 70 %. Assurez-vous également que le substrat est bien drainant pour éviter l'excès d'humidité.
