Philodendron tortum

Philodendron tortum, nicknamed the "Fern-leaf Philodendron", is an exotic and refined houseplant that stands out with its long, finely divided and toothed leaves, resembling a fern. It is an elegant, more or less climbing species that fits equally well in modern interiors or urban jungle-inspired spaces. It will shine when placed on a support or in a bright corner, but sheltered from direct sunlight and surrounded by good ambient humidity, essential for its well-being.

Philodendron tortum belongs to the Araceae family. This botanical species originates from the humid tropical forests of South America, particularly Brazil, where it grows in the shade of tall trees, in rich, well-drained soil. Indoors, when grown in a pot, this plant can reach a height of 1 m and a spread of around 60 cm. Often described as a climbing plant in botanical literature, its habit can vary depending on its environment and cultivation method. Its stems bear long leaves with pointed lobes, in a deep green shade, with a light and airy appearance, reminiscent of the fronds of Polypodium. Indoors, this "philo" is frequently cultivated with an upright or slightly spreading habit, as its stems do not naturally cling without support. The growth of this Philodendron tortum is fast, especially in a warm and humid environment. The plant rarely flowers indoors. It prefers temperatures between 18 and 24 °C, light and well-drained soil, and high humidity. Like most Philodendrons, this plant is toxic if ingested, particularly for pets and young children.

Philodendron tortum is perfect for contemporary, tropical, or minimalist interiors. In a conservatory, pair it with Philodendron scandens 'Brasil' and Anthurium clarinervium, which share its need for soft light and humidity. For a jungle effect, place it on a moss pole and combine it with natural accessories like wicker baskets or exotic-print cushions.
