More information

This philodendron is a rare indoor young plant with very slow growth, a mutation of 'Black Cardinal', but apparently much more challenging to cultivate. It features thick, heart-shaped, glossy leaves, some of which display a pointed shape (reminiscent of certain alocasias). They emerge in a purple-red to bright red hue, gradually turning to dark green as the leaf matures. This is a non-climbing variety with a compact habit. It requires bright light but no direct sunlight, along with high humidity to thrive. It flourishes in well-drained soil and prefers temperatures between 18 and 27°C.

Description

Philodendron 'Red Heart' is a rare variety, considered challenging to cultivate and therefore best suited for experienced growers. It develops very glossy, heart-shaped leaves, some with a very pointed shape, tinged with bright red or burgundy, covering all or part of the emerging leaf. With very slow growth, it has a compact and non-climbing habit.

Belonging to the family Araceae, Philodendron 'Red Heart' is a mutation of ‘Black Cardinal’, a fairly well-known cultivar, itself derived from P. erubescens. The origins of the species Philodendron erubescens, or Red-leaf Philodendron, lie in the humid tropical forests of Colombia. 'Red Heart' is non-climbing, with very slow growth. There is still relatively little information available about this cultivar, and it is considered difficult to grow. At maturity, it likely reaches a height of 50 to 60 cm with a similar spread. The wavy leaves, with a glossy, very thick texture, are a more or less pointed heart shape. Their colour is purplish-red when young, then turns to dark green, often retaining some red at the centre.

Philodendron 'Red Heart' is a very slow-growing plant that requires very attentive care, best reserved for seasoned growers, as it appears to be somewhat delicate in cultivation. Pair it with other aroids like Aglaonema or a striking variegated Calathea such as White Fusion to create a beautiful contrast.
