Description

The Dracaena fragrans 'Kanzi' is a beautiful variety of dragon tree with variegated green and white foliage that adds a touch of exoticism and elegance to your interior. This plant fits perfectly into contemporary or minimalist décors. Its cultivation is not difficult and it requires little water. Place it in a bright spot with indirect sunlight, and water moderately, allowing the substrate to dry out between waterings. Avoid overwatering as the Dracaena fragrans is prone to root rot.

Derived from the fragrant dragon tree (Dracaena fragrans), the Dracaena 'Kanzi' belongs to the Asparagaceae family. The name 'Dracaena' comes from the Greek 'drakaina', meaning 'female dragon', referring to the reddish sap produced by some species. Native to the tropical forests of West Africa, the Dracaena fragrans grows naturally under forest canopies in humid, shaded environments. Indoors, it prefers indirect light or partial shade, avoiding direct sunlight which can scorch its leaves. Moderate ambient humidity, around 40 to 50%, is ideal, along with temperatures between 15 and 25°C. This plant is toxic to pets, particularly cats and dogs, if ingested. The Dracaena fragrans is known for its air-purifying properties, helping to improve indoor air quality by absorbing certain harmful substances.

The Kanzi dragon tree stands out for its upright, compact habit with sparsely ramified stems. Its leaves grow in rosettes along the stems, arranged in a spiral, giving them a slightly helicoid appearance. This arrangement enhances the plant’s elegance, adding volume and movement. Each long, arching leaf seems to extend gracefully from the stem, giving the plant an airy yet structured silhouette. The leaves are broad, oblanceolate in shape, with a leathery texture and measuring between 30 and 70 cm in length. Their colour is a slightly greyish green, streaked with creamy-white longitudinal stripes and edged with dark green. The growth of Dracaena 'Kanzi' is slow, reaching a mature height of 1 to 1.5 m, with a spread of 0.1 to 0.5 m. Flowering indoors is rare; however, when it occurs, it produces small, pleasantly scented white flowers.

The Dracaena 'Kanzi' is perfect for a bright living room or office, where its chic, refined look works wonders. Tall and graphic, this plant fits seamlessly into contemporary, Scandinavian, or minimalist styles. To showcase it, opt for a matt ceramic or natural wicker planter. Versatile and low-maintenance, this dragon tree adds height and volume, making it ideal for dressing up a reading nook or empty space with sophistication.

As companion plants, consider pairing it with a Zamioculcas zamiifolia 'Raven', whose near-black leaves will create a striking contrast with the Dracaena’s bright foliage, and a Sansevieria 'Laurentii'. Together, these plants will create a modern, graphic ambiance. Arrange them in matching pots for a coordinated look, or vary the heights for added visual dynamism.

Location

Maintenance and care

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Pruning is generally not necessary. However, to encourage branching, you can cut one of the branches and apply a healing sealant. New buds will appear approximately two months later.

Disease and pest advice
