Description

The Croton ‘Tamara’ (Codiaeum variegatum) is a variety that stands out in the usual world of houseplants due to several distinctive characteristics. Aesthetically, the 'Tamara' has a bushy habit with several thick stems and forms a small tree at maturity, with fairly short, pointed, green foliage variegated with creamy white. In terms of cultivation, it tolerates both medium and bright light and is more forgiving regarding ambient humidity and watering. In short, a resilient plant, ideal for beginners, office spaces as well as less brightly lit rooms. It's also an interesting choice as a stand-alone plant in a not unduly large room as it makes an impact with its exotic appearance and bright foliage that catches the eye.

The Croton 'Tamara' (Codiaeum variegatum 'Tamara') is a perennial bushy plant belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family. Indoors, its growth is moderate, and the plant can reach a height of 1.5 to 2.5 m. Its habit is upright and compact, with several thick stems and dense, erect foliage. The lanceolate leaves have a smooth and glossy texture. They display an unusual mix of green and white.

The Codiaeum genus includes bushes native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, where they thrive in warm and humid environments, typically in light undergrowth or on the edge of the forest.

In indoor cultivation, the Croton 'Tamara' is undemanding regarding its growing conditions and requires medium to high light, avoiding direct sunlight which could scorch its leaves. It appreciates standard ambient humidity and a stable temperature around 18 to 29° C. Regular watering is necessary, keeping the substrate slightly moist but without excess to prevent root rot. It is recommended to mist the foliage regularly with non-calcareous water to maintain adequate humidity and prevent spider mite infestations. Here too, the 'Tamara' tolerates occasional watering lapses, a substrate left to dry a bit longer, or standard ambient humidity.

Warning - The Croton 'Tamara' is toxic: its sap contains an irritating white latex that can cause burns if ingested and skin reactions upon contact. It is therefore advisable to handle the plant with gloves and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

With its bicoloured leaves, the Croton 'Tamara' is ideal for brightening up a living room, office, or well-lit conservatory. Its tropical appearance is perfect for modern, minimalist interiors, as well as bohemian or exotic ones. Given its stature, place it directly on the floor to transform your space into a warm and welcoming green corner.

Location

Maintenance and care

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Light pruning in spring to remove damaged leaves and encourage branching. Prune overly long stems to maintain a compact habit.

Disease and pest advice
