Description
Campanula poscharskyana, the wall bellflower, is a highly floriferous perennial groundcover, perfect for clothing rock gardens, walls and paving joints. Native to the limestone mountains of the Balkans, it is perfectly hardy and undemanding. Its small star-shaped mauve-blue flowers, which appear in masses from May to September, brighten sunny to partially shaded spots in the garden.
This bellflower belongs to the Campanulaceae family. It is a botanical species sometimes confused with the Dalmatian bellflower (Campanula portenschlagiana), which it resembles. It is found in the wild in the Dinaric Alps of the north-western Balkans, mainly in Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro, on limestone cliffs, screes and dry-stone walls. It is a herbaceous perennial, semi-evergreen in mild climates, deciduous in harsh winters. It produces long creeping stolons that root on contact with the soil, allowing the clump to spread and regenerate. Its growth rarely exceeds 15 to 20cm in height, but the flowering stems straighten up and reach around 30cm. At maturity, each plant can cover 40 to 80cm in width. Growth is rapid, producing a good cushion within two to three years. The foliage consists of small, rounded to heart-shaped, 2 to 4 cm long, medium green, slightly toothed leaves. The star-shaped flowers fully open with five lobes, 2 to 2.5cm wide, are a luminous lavender-blue to mauve, paler at the centre. They follow one another without interruption from May-June until September, especially if the plant is lightly pruned after the first wave of flowers. It produces small capsules containing a large quantity of fine seeds, which can self-sow in soil crevices. The flowers are visited by bees and other pollinators.
In the garden, the wall bellflower can be used to carpet partially shaded rock gardens, border edges, the top or foot of stone walls, banks, and gaps between paving slabs, as well as the edge of a pot or container. At the foot of deciduous trees, you can plant it in front of Hakonechloa macra 'All Gold' among Heuchera 'Silver Scrolls'. It pairs very well with the creeping bugle Ajuga reptans 'Burgundy Glow' and Campanula poscharskyana 'E.H. Frost' in a cool rock garden.

Planting and care
Sowing Campanula poscharskyana:
Sow from February to April under a bright shelter, or in May–June in situ, in fine, well-drained potting compost. The seeds are very small: spread them on the surface, over firm substrate, without covering them, simply pressing them in lightly with a small board. Mist-spray so as not to displace them, then keep the compost slightly moist, never waterlogged, at a temperature of around 15–20°C. Germination generally takes 2 to 3 weeks.
As soon as the young seedlings bear 2 true leaves, prick them out into small pots, then gradually harden them off outdoors before final planting in well-drained soil, in gentle sun or partial shade.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
