Description

From the large family AsteraceaeZinnia Carrousel Mixed forms a large herbaceous annual plant (50 cm high and 25 cm wide) that produces numerous flowers from July to the first frosts. Its official name is Zinnia elegans Carrousel Mixed.

Its stiff, well-branched stems bear broad, rounded, pointed pale green leaves.

The medium-sized, solitary terminal flowers, 7 to 9 cm in diameter, display bright, shimmering colours.

The ruffled daisy-shaped flowers are capitula consisting of a small, dome-shaped centre surrounded by large tricoloured petals that display characteristic concentric circles of colour. Small yellow star-shaped florets sometimes appear arranged in a circle, in the centre of the flower head.

The slender silhouette of Zinnia Carrousel Mixed plant's growth makes it best for use in the middle-ground or background of beds. The common zinnia prefers a warm, sunny location. It requires very little water and a well-drained soil will suit it perfectly. The flowers even though unscented, still attract butterflies that come to feed on their nectar.

The stiff stems of the Zinnia Carrousel Mix have an excellent vase life and make it possible to create colourful summer bouquets. Combine it in your flowerbeds with Centaurea, Cosmos and Clarkia.

Planting and care

Sow Zinnia :

  • In March-April, under heated cover to obtain young plants that can be transplanted in May. The ideal growing temperature is 22 °C. It takes 14 days for the young shoots to appear. Seed emergence occurs in the dark so make sure to cover the seeds well with a centimetre of soil when sowing.

  • In May, directly in the garden, in a warm, sunny place. Plant the seedlings out in your beds, 30 cm apart.

Powdery mildew (a fungus that forms a visible white powder on the surface of the foliage) can sometimes coat the leaves and impair the plant growth

Deadheading faded flowers will encourage the production of new blooms.
