Description
The 'Silver Princess' Daisy (Leucanthemum x superbum) is a robust and elegant perennial, appreciated for its generous flowering and ease of maintenance. Its countryside flowers, white with a yellow heart, attract pollinators from June to September. With a compact habit (30 cm tall), this variety is perfect for borders, flower beds, or even containers. Hardy down to -20°C, versatile and undemanding, it's a reliable choice for many gardens.
Leucanthemum belongs to the Asteraceae family, which includes many popular perennial plants in our gardens. 'Silver Princess', a horticultural cultivar derived from Leucanthemum x superbum, is a compact version of the large daisy, often found in cottage gardens. This variety forms a rounded clump, reaching about 30 cm in height and width. The plant produces a large rosette of basal leaves from which multiple leafy stems emerge in spring. This airy, deciduous vegetation dries up in autumn. From July to October, solitary white flowers in the form of heads, about 7 cm in diameter, appear. They have thin flat ligules around a bright yellow centre, and their flowering can be prolonged by regularly removing faded flowers. The dark green, elongated, and toothed leaves are slightly fleshy and shiny. The plant reaches its mature size in five years and has a long lifespan.
Perfectly suited to natural style gardens, this 'Silver Princess' daisy is valued in flower beds for its simplicity and robustness. It also adds a lot of charm to floral compositions. Combine it with other easy perennials like coneflowers, summer asters, Chinese peonies, and peach-leaved bellflowers.

Planting and care
Sowing:
Sow Shasta Daisy 'Silver Princess' from late winter to late spring (February to May) or from late summer to autumn (August to October).
Sow indoors in pots or containers with a peaty compost, at a temperature of 13 to 16°C. Cover the seeds lightly with vermiculite or sifted compost. The seed requires light to germinate. The compost should be kept moist, but not waterlogged. Germination should occur in 21 to 28 days.
If there is no germination, or if the germination rate is low, move the seedlings to a cold area at 4°C (in the refrigerator) for two to four weeks, then return them to full light and higher temperature. This will stimulate germination, as the seeds need vernalization to break their dormancy. Germination will occur after this period of 'warm-cold-warm' alternation.
Transplant into 7.5 cm pots when the seedlings have developed 2 leaves and are manageable. Gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions for 10 to 15 days before planting.
Choose a sunny and well-drained location to optimise plant growth. Shasta Daisies tolerate some shade, but will be less floriferous. Space the plants 70 cm apart.
Cultivation:
Plant this daisy in deep, loose, moist, or even occasionally dry, well-drained soil. This plant tolerates limestone. It thrives in a sunny, possibly partially shaded, location. It withstands temperatures down to -20°C. Regularly remove faded flowers and clean the plant in spring to remove dead foliage. This daisy may be attacked by aphids or snails and may develop leaf spots.

- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:

Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
