Description

This mix of red valerian or Centranthus Star Ruber Mixed, is a robust perennial that grows naturally in the sunny, dry areas of Southern Europe.

Its erect stems bear opposite, lanceolate, dark green leaves with hints of blue. The plant reaches a height of 80 to 100 cm when in flower.

The flowers that are held at the tips of the stems, are gathered into compact cymes of rose, maroon and white. The flowers are lightly scented. The flowering period is very long as it usually starts at the beginning of May and ends with the first cold spells in October, which means that it blooms nearly 6 months out of 12!

Red valerian is an easy-to-grow plant that self-seeds readily on its own. Plant it in well-drained, even dry soil and make sure above all else, that it gets a lot of sunlight. It adapts to the poor soil of rock gardens and slopes, and even grows very well on old walls.

Additionally, it will make an excellent cut flower for your summer bouquets.

An eco-friendly gesture: All summer long, the melliferous flowers of Centranthus Star Ruber Mixed attract pollinating insects and butterflies to your garden. A good way to improve the ecosystem of your garden and vegetable plots.

Planting and care

Sow red valerian from March to June in a seed tray. Use good quality soil. Broadcast sow the seeds. Cover the seeds with a sprinkling of compost or vermiculite and tamp down lightly. Water generously with a very fine rose. Place your seed tray in a bright position without direct sunlight, at a temperature of 18°C to 20°C.

Seed emergence will take 21 to 30 days. As soon as the seedlings have reached a height of 5 cm, transplant them into small pots. 15 days before planting them out, begin to gradually acclimatize to a temperature of 15 °C.

At the end of May, beginning of June, temperatures in the garden should be warm enough to transplant your young plants. Choose a site with plenty of sunshine and well-drained soil. Space your plants 30 cm apart.

Regularly deadhead spent flowers in order to encourage further blooming.
