Description
Campanula medium 'Big Ben Deep Blue' F1 is a hybrid variety of Canterbury bell campanula specially developed for cut flower production, valued for its upright deep blue bells, long stems and generous flowering. It is suitable for flower beds, borders or large pots.
Sowing is easier with pelleted seeds, due to the small size of the seeds: each seed is coated with a fine layer of clay or neutral material, making it larger, easier to handle and to sow individually.
This campanula belongs to the Campanulaceae family. The wild species is Campanula medium, sometimes called 'Canterbury bells' or 'garden bellflower'. The cultivar 'Big Ben Deep Blue' is part of a series of F1 hybrids developed by Evanthia Genetics in the Netherlands, for florists and professional growers. It offers more abundant flowering, better flower holding and more uniform growth than the type.
The habit is upright, with a rigid main stem, sometimes branched if conditions are favourable. Its growth rate is faster or slower, depending on temperature and available light. In the ground, it can reach 60 to 80cm in height, or even a little more in rich, moist soil. In pots, it remains slightly more compact, around 50 to 60cm. This plant is annual or biennial, depending on the growing method.
The flowers, shaped like large upright bells, measure 4 to 6 cm in length. They are well open, borne on short pedicels and arranged in terminal clusters on the stem. Their colour is a deep, luminous blue, uniform over the entire corolla. Flowering begins 10 to 14 weeks after transplanting, May to July in temperate climates. This flowering is well distributed along the stem and offers excellent vase life (up to 10 days).
The foliage is deciduous, composed of broader basal leaves, lanceolate to ovate, with a toothed margin, forming a rosette at the start of growth. The stem leaves are smaller, narrow and alternate, often slightly hairy. The stems are robust, angular, and sometimes slightly rough. The root system is a taproot, with a long main root and a few fine secondary roots. The plant is not well-suited to late transplanting or to shallow containers. The fruits are elongated capsules containing very small seeds, which ripen in late summer.
The 'Big Ben Deep Blue' F1 cut flower campanula combines well with other spring or summer flowers with blue or white blooms. It can be associated with Annual Verbenas, Wild Campanulas, or sweet woodruff (Galium odoratum) as a groundcover. Three campanula cultivars that can accompany 'Big Ben Deep Blue' in a flower bed are: 'Big Ben White', 'Big Ben Lavender', and 'Big Ben Pink'. Due to their varied shades, they form a soft, cohesive arrangement.
In a flower bed, you can use it behind low-growing plants or in front of taller plants, or in a large flowering border.
In pots, choose a container at least 20 to 25 cm deep to accommodate the taproot.

Planting and care
Sowing can be done in two ways:
1/ Early in the season, from February to April, under cover, heated to 18°C using a seed tray placed in a mini-propagator. Fill it with seed compost, sow the seeds on the surface, barely covering them with compost, or better still, with vermiculite, as they need light to germinate. Keep the substrate moist but not waterlogged and ventilate regularly to prevent damping off. When the seedlings start to grow, prick them out into 7 cm pots or small 8 or 9 cm pots to grow on. When the roots have sufficiently filled the pot, plant them out in their final position in open ground at a density of about 10 plants per square metre.
2/ You can also sow in late spring/early summer in open ground in a well-prepared and well-cultivated soil. Sow the very fine seeds in furrows, 6 mm deep, spaced 15 cm apart. Prick out the seedlings before they become too large, spacing them 15 cm apart in a border reserved for them. Plant them outdoors at a distance of 38 cm between each plant, in their final position.
Although it is not difficult to cultivate, it is essential to provide this campanula with a rich, deep soil. Also, ensure it does not lack water. Full sun tends to fade its colours; light shade gives the best results.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
