Description
Zinnia elegans 'Luminosa' is a selection with dahlia-like flowers that produces an abundance of large, double flowers in luminous shades of pink, carried on long sturdy stems. Stunning in borders, its cut flowers are perfect for creating fresh or dried summer bouquets. Tolerant of heat and fairly dry soils, 'Luminosa' is easy to grow in fertile, well-drained soil. Sow under cover from March, or directly in the ground after the last frosts for a generous and prolonged summer flowering.
Zinnia elegans 'Luminosa' is an annual variety from the Asteraceae family, native to Mexico. It is an old cultivar introduced in 1932. It was described in 1934 by James Vick in his Garden and Floral Guide as a new shade, "a luminous deep pink with soft salmon tones." Each plant forms a branching clump within a few weeks, reaching 70 to 90 cm in height and 30 to 45 cm in width. Its robust stems bear lanceolate to elliptical, medium green leaves. Flowering begins 10 to 13 weeks after sowing and continues from July until the first frosts, depending on growing conditions. The flowers, with heads 10 to 12 cm in diameter, attract pollinators such as butterflies and bees. After producing its seeds, the plant dies back. The seeds harvested at the end of the season can be saved for sowing the following year.
With its large, luminous pink pompon flowers, Zinnia elegans ‘Luminosa’ brings colour and freshness to borders and summer bouquets. When paired with white cosmos like 'Sensation Purity’, it creates an airy contrast that highlights the richness of its colour. The large umbels of Ammi majus 'Queen of Africa' will add a wild and romantic note while providing volume and lightness to the composition. To enhance the brilliance of ‘Luminosa’, combine it with Rudbeckia 'Rudy Double Rose Yellow', which produces double, ruffled pompon flowers in a palette of yellow, orange, and coppery pink tones. In a vase, these combinations create shimmering arrangements all summer long.

Planting and care
Sow Zinnia 'Luminosa' seeds directly outdoors in May, once the soil has warmed. Choose a location in full sun on soil that has been previously kept moist, well-drained, well-worked, weeded and loosened. Sow the seeds at a depth of 3 mm, spaced 30 cm apart. Water regularly, especially during dry periods. Germination typically takes 7 to 14 days. When the zinnia seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out to space the plants 30 cm apart.
You can also sow indoors from March to April at a temperature of 15-25°C. After sowing, keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged, and expose your sowing to light, which promotes germination. When the young plants are large enough to handle, transplant them and grow them in cooler conditions.
When the plants are well developed and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them gradually to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting outside in their final position. Zinnia elegans are easy plants to grow in sun, in well-drained to slightly dry, fairly rich, even clay soil. These plants are susceptible to powdery mildew in humid climates, especially if they do not benefit from good air circulation around them. They perform well in climates with long, hot and dry summers. They are not hardy at all.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).

- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
