I am very pleased with this purchase, as mentioned in a previous comment, the young plants did not flower last year but they have survived the winter (remained in leaf) and have proven to be very floriferous this summer. Those sown this year have also bloomed. The seeds produced in abundance suggest that the flowerbed will be very generous next year.

Description

Nicotiana alata Lime Green is a variety of tobacco variety plant that displays lime-green blooms that are both original and easy to associate with all other blooms. This tobacco plant is a perennial plant grown as an annual and is also appreciated for the scent that emanates from its flowers on warm summer evenings. Carried by tall stems, its velvety trumpet-shaped flowers open from the morning onwards, until autumn. They deserve a special place on the edges of walkways, in large flower tubs on the terrace and in bouquets. This plant thrives in positions without scorching sunlight and rich, moist, but well-drained soil.

Native to South America, in an area ranging from southern Brazil to northern Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, Nicotiana alata is a plant of the Solanaceae family and is grown as an ornamental annual in our gardens. It is a tall herbaceous plant that reaches an average height of 70 cm when in flower, and a width of 20-30 cm. It forms a rosette of 10 to 25 cm long, elongated, wavy, shortly decurrent, clasping leaves that are covered with glandular hairs that make them a little sticky. Flowering starts in mid-summer and continues until early autumn. The inflorescence is a raceme bearing tubular, trumpet-shaped flowers that are 5 to 10 cm long. The underside of the corolla is covered with glandular hairs. It is one of the most fragrant species. It exudes honeyed, waxy, dry, warm, aromatic scents. The flowers of the Lime Green variety displays a very brilliant light green-yellow colour that is almost fluorescent in the dark. The fruit is a capsule containing many small seeds.

The 'Lime Green' variety is difficult to find in catalogues, but it produces beautiful plants in wilder-looking beds. They can be combined with orange, bright blue, pink or purple flowers, creating decors that are never tasteless. The light foliage of Love-in-a-mist, Delphiniums and cosmos contrast well with their large rosettes, as do the tall inflorescences of purpletop vervain and the large panicles of phlox. To fully enjoy their sweet scent, they should be placed on the terrace in large pots.

Warning: seeds are best meant for very experienced gardeners who are used to sowing very fine seeds. These seeds are as fine as dust and are hardly visible to the naked eye.

Planting and care

Sow tobacco plant seeds in March-April in pots or tubs filled with moist compost and cover with a fine sprinkling of vermiculite. Place in a propagator or seal them in a polythene bag and place in a warm place. Maintain a temperature between 18 and 23 °C. Keep in the light as this helps with germination. Keep the surface of the compost  moist but not waterlogged; germination usually takes 7 to 21 days. When the plants are sufficiently developed, transplant them into 7.5 cm pots or tubs. Accustom the plants to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting them out after any risk of frost has passed, spacing them 45-60 cm apart. Cultivation: tobacco plants thrive in rich, deep, consistently moist soil. They like the sun, but scorching sunlight will damage their foliage. They also can grow in partial shade. In mild climates, these plants often become perennial. They self-seed easily and just about everywhere in the garden.
