Description
The ‘American Legion’ poppy is an exceptional variety of Papaver rhoeas, the common poppy, prized for its large bright red flowers. Perfect for embellishing gardens, flowerbeds, and meadows, this poppy catches all eyes with its vibrant colour and natural grace. Easy to sow and cultivate, this annual plant brings a unique touch of colour to any setting. Ideal in brand-new gardens, it quickly fills empty spaces and thrives in poor soil, even heavy, chalky, and degraded.
Papaver rhoeas, commonly known as poppy, belongs to the Papaveraceae family. Native to temperate regions of Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia, this species has been widely naturalised worldwide, especially in fields, meadows, and disturbed areas. The ‘American Legion’ cultivar is distinguished by its sturdy, upright stems reaching 60 cm in height, bearing large solitary flowers emerging from finely cut foliage. When the stem is broken, it releases a white milky sap. The silky-textured petals are a deep red, almost scarlet, with a small central white cross that enhances their charm. Flowering occurs from spring to early summer, providing a burst of colour for 4 to 5 weeks. The flowering period depends on the climate and sowing date. The seed capsules that follow the flowering are also ornamental and can be used in dried bouquets. The plant has an upright habit, its growth is fast, and it self-seeds spontaneously. It is an excellent flower for natural gardens.
The Poppy ‘American Legion’ is perfect for creating brightly coloured flowerbeds or naturalising a flowery meadow. Its large shining flowers contrast beautifully with the softer hues of plants like cornflower (Centaurea cyanus), ‘Oxford Blue’ Love-in-a-Mist, and 'Rythm & Blues' Toadflax. Paired with other poppies in white or pink varieties like ‘Mother of Pearl’ or ‘Shirley Mix’, this intense red poppy creates a fantastic visual effect. For a wilder garden, it can be sown in a mix with light grasses like Stipa tenuifolia, which will highlight its graceful habit while adding movement overall.

Planting and care
In spring, sow 'American Legion' poppy seeds directly outdoors. Choose a sunny spot with well-loosened and pre-worked soil. Sow the fine seeds just below the soil surface, mixing them with sand or fine compost to sow less densely. Water regularly, especially during dry periods. Germination usually takes 18 to 22 days.
When the young poppy plants are sufficiently developed to be handled, thin out the sowing and space them 30 cm apart. They should not lack water or nutrients at the time of flowering. These plants readily self-seed in the garden. Remove faded flowers if you wish to avoid spontaneous seedlings.
Although they prefer clayey and calcareous soils, poppies are undemanding plants that adapt to most well-worked soils. Their seeds retain their viability for a long time, and it is not uncommon to see seedlings reappear, years after a 'failed' sowing, following soil cultivation.
Important note: all poppies are toxic. However, seeds produced by the species P. somniferum and P. paeoniflorum can be consumed. Generally, the seeds are used in bakery recipes (breads, brioches...)

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).

- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.

This will vary depending on where you live:
