Description

California Poppy 'Garden Mix' also known by its latin name Eschscholzia californica, is an easy-to-grow, spreading annual plant that blooms abundantly from June to September in single flowers of different colours.

It gets its main common names (California Poppy, Paper Flowers, American Poppy) from the resemblance of its flowers with those of its cousin, the common poppy, as well as from its West American origins where it abounds in rocky expanses.

Because of its relatively small size (40cm), California Poppy is generally used in front of flower beds, in rock gardens or in pots on the patio. It contents itself with any type of soil, even dry, poor ones but it prefers lighter soils to heavy ones.

It self-seeds easily on its own and from year to year it forms beautiful, natural looking beds because although the plant is not frost-resistant, its seeds are. It can sometimes become quite invasive.

position in full sun will encourage blooming.

Their cut flowers allow you to make short-lived but lovely bouquets.

Its melliferous flowers will attract bees and hoverflies to your garden, making them an undeniable ecological asset.

Planting and care

Sow California poppy directly from March to May, in rows 15cm apart. Cover the seeds with 1cm of fine soil and water regularly. The seeds will sprout in 15 to 20 days. Sow in succession, every 15 days from March to May, to ensure regular and abundant flowering from June to September. By sowing under glass in February at 15-20 °C, you can obtain young plants ready to be planted out after the last frosts and have your first flowers as early as May. The taproot of this plant makes it very difficult to prick out successfully. It is therefore preferable to prepare your young plants by sowing them directly into pots.
