Description

The Double Marigold Sunny Girl is a hardy annual plant, very easy to grow, distinguished by its daisy-shaped flowers measuring 8 to 10 cm (3.1 - 3.9 in) in diameter. Its cream-colored petals are tinged with dark red at their tips and on their undersides. In the middle of the flower, the brown center offers a beautiful contrast with the petals.
Its straight stems bear oblong, hairy leaves.
The flowering of this Garden Marigold is abundant from June to September, and even until the first frost. The flowers open and close, following the sun's path.

Reaching a height of about 65 cm (25.6 in), this Calendula will find its place in the second row of flower beds behind low-growing and creeping species. Its beauty, the uniqueness of its colors, and its good vase life make it an excellent cut flower.

Its foliage gives off a strong odor that deters parasites such as aphids, cabbage worms, asparagus worms, tomato worms, as well as ladybugs and whiteflies. Moreover, the Marigold is a melliferous plant that attracts pollinators, including hoverflies, which are voracious aphid consumers. It is therefore an asset in the vegetable garden for organic cultivation.

It is of great interest to gardeners who are advocates of organic cultivation.

The Calendula officinalis is a medicinal plant used in herbal medicine, but also for its dyeing properties, hence its nickname False Saffron.

Planting and care

Several cultivations are possible for the Garden Marigold Sunny Girl: Sown in April-May under shelters and then transplanted in May, flowering will occur from June to September. Sown directly in open ground in May, flowering will occur from July to September. Choose a sunny location. The Marigold can be subject to powdery mildew attacks (the leaves are covered with a whitish bloom), a well-drained or even dry soil will hinder the arrival of this parasitic fungus.
