Description
The interspecific Impatiens Solarscape® XL Lilac Spark charm with their large, lilac flowers with pink centres. Vigorous, opulent, and covered in blooms from spring to autumn, this variety creates a spectacle both in beds and pots, including in sunny positions. Resistant to diseases, particularly downy mildew, and tolerant of heat, this annual is easy to grow in rich, moist, well-drained soil.
The Impatiens Solarscape® XL Lilac Spark ‘PAS1498986’ is an F1 hybrid cultivar developed by PanAmerican Seed resulting from cross-breeding between two botanical species called Impatiens walleriana and I. hawkeri. The Solarscape® XL series offers impatiens suited to both sun and shade. Grown from seed, these varieties are comparable to those propagated by cuttings. The average size of XL plants is 20% larger than standard varieties: they stand out in beds, borders, and containers.
With a bushy, rounded habit, the impatiens Solarscape® XL Lilac Spark reaches 28 to 33 cm in height and a generous spread of 46 to 51 cm. Its large pink-mauve flowers with pink centres measure 6-7 cm in diameter. Flowering extends from May-June until the first frosts depending on the sowing date. The ovate, dark green, glossy leaves measure 5 to 7 cm long. The fleshy, ramified stems from the base contribute to the plant's density. It is a frost-tender perennial grown as an annual in our climates: it is completely destroyed by frost.
In landscape design, the Impatiens Solarscape® XL Lilac Spark colours beds, borders, planters, and hanging baskets for many long weeks. It pairs well with ornamental grasses such as Pennisetum or Carex and with silver-foliaged plants like Dusty Miller 'Silver Dust' to create elegant contrasts. In pots, combine it with calibrachoa 'Can-Can Rosies Pink Vein or trailing verbenas 'Virgo Sky Blue' for a cascading colour effect.
Our advice: To preserve soil moisture, apply a mulch around the base of the plants.

Planting and care
To successfully sow Impatiens Solarscape XL Lilac Spark, begin by sowing the seeds indoors approximately 8 to 10 weeks before the last frosts typically observed. Use a light, well-draining potting compost, preferably enriched with organic matter. The seeds should simply be pressed onto the surface of the soil as they require light to germinate. Maintain a constant temperature of 20-24°C and ensure the growing medium remains moist but not waterlogged. Germination should occur within 14 to 21 days. Once the seedlings are sufficiently developed, transplant them into individual pots, gradually acclimatising them to outdoor conditions. Wait until the risk of frosts has completely passed before planting them in the ground or in containers, spaced 15-20 cm apart.
Impatiens are easy to grow. They should be placed in full sun or partial shade. To accelerate their growth, bring them on in pots in a warm and bright location. Place the Impatiens in cool, well-drained soil rich in humus. Water regularly, but without overwatering. Apply a liquid fertiliser for containers once or twice a week during the growing period. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as needed to maintain a neat appearance and prolong flowering. Be mindful to protect them from slugs, which are fond of their young leaves. Lastly, although this variety is resistant to downy mildew, it is important to monitor for signs of disease or parasitic issues and intervene promptly if necessary.

- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
