Description
Helichrysum bracteatum Fireball is appreciated for its red flowers tinged with yellow and orange. All summer long, this annual plant abundantly offers us its perfect flowers for composing charming dried bouquets, which are coming back into fashion. This beautiful clump, which can reach a height of 90 cm, will find a place in a sunny flower bed or border. It is an easy plant that loves heat and well-drained soil and tolerates drought well. Sow under cover in March-April or directly in the garden in April-May.
From the Asteraceae family, like sunflowers or daisies, Helichrysum bracteatum is a perennial herbaceous plant native to Australia, grown as an annual in our latitudes. The everlasting flower is also known as Bracteantha bracteata. It is appreciated for its long and generous flowering. The heads bloom from July to October. They consist of a yellow heart of fertile flowers surrounded by colourful, shiny bracts that do not fade. This characteristic makes these flowers perfect for making dried flower bouquets. Harvest the flowers before they fully bloom and hang them upside down in a well-ventilated and dark place to dry. Then remove the leaves and let your creativity take over.
Helichrysum bractaetum Fireball everlasting flowers are quite tall at 90 cm. They are best used in a flower bed or a border. They will also brighten up the vegetable garden with their flamboyant flowers. Combine them with other flowers for drying such as Statice QIS Apricot with its pale orange-pink flowers, Amarantine Strawberry Fields with its red flowers, or Craspedia Drumstick with its yellow balls.

Planting and care
Fireball everlasting flower seeds can be sown in March-April, under a frame where they are to flower or in a tray indoors. The ideal germination temperature is 18 to 20 °C. Sow your seeds in a mixture of garden soil and compost. Germination can take between 15 and 20 days. Once the seedlings are strong enough, transplant them into pots and plant them in the garden once all risk of frost has passed, with a spacing of 35 to 40 cm.
You can also sow directly in place in April or May, once the soil has warmed up enough and the frost has passed. Thin out your seedlings to keep only the most developed plants and maintain a distance of about 40 cm between each plant.
Pinch the young plants to encourage branching and remove faded flowers as they appear.
Helichrysum bracteatum appreciate warmth and sunny, or slightly shaded, exposures. They grow best in rich, neutral, light, and well-draining soil. They tolerate drought, although regular watering during flowering allows for more developed plants. They also tolerate poor soils or partial shade, but are less floriferous.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
