Maiden Pink Brilliant seeds - Dianthus deltoides

Dianthus deltoides 'Brilliant', also known as maiden pink or heathland pink, is a spreading perennial that forms a persistent ground cover even in winter. Its narrow, bright green foliage sometimes tinged with bronze serves as a backdrop to a profusion of red-pink flowers, which bloom from late spring to summer. Hardy and drought-resistant, this hardy plant is perfect for enhancing sunny rockeries, walls, or slopes. It thrives in well-drained and sunny soil.

The maiden pink 'Brilliant' belongs to the Caryophyllaceae family. It is also known as heathland pink or prostrate pink. It is a cultivar derived from Dianthus deltoides, a species native to Europe and temperate Asia. This pink's mature size will not exceed 15 cm in height, in flowers, with a spread of 30 cm or more. It forms a small prostrate clump with a spreading habit. Its tiny, linear, medium-green leaves sometimes tinged with purple are flexible and tightly packed on thin stems. Flowering begins in May-June, and continues until September-October if the soil is not too dry. The plant is continuously covered with small fringed flowers. They are slightly fragrant.

The maiden pink thrives particularly in an open location, on a sunny slope, where it can spread freely. Perfect for well-drained rockeries, slopes, or the tops of dry stone walls, it brings floribundity and delicacy. This perennial is also ideal for adorning the base of bushy plants in pots, enhancing large containers, or beautifying alpine troughs. Before planting, in heavy or clay soils, incorporate gravel and coarse sand to improve drainage and avoid excess moisture. The 'Brilliant' pink pairs beautifully with alpine plants such as alyssums, soapworts, creeping phlox (Phlox subulata and Phlox douglasii), aubrietas, candytufts, and rock roses, creating harmonious and resilient compositions.

The generic name comes from the Greek 'dios' for 'Jupiter or divine' and 'anthos' for 'flower'. These dianthuses, or 'divine flowers', were so named by Theophrastus due to their sweet fragrance and beauty. Deltoides refers to 'delta', the Greek letter, in relation to the shape of the petals.
