Description

The Fancy Purple Picotee larkspur or Delphinium displays tall elegant blooms on sturdy stems all summer long. Its predominantly white flowers are exquisitely brushed with lavender blue, over delicate soft-green foliage. This stunning new variety looks fabulous at the back of flower beds and is perfect for creating long-lasting bouquets. This easy-to-grow annual can be sown directly in flower beds or borders. In a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil this delphinium will soon become a gorgeous addition to any garden.

Fancy Purple Picotee is one of the many hybrids derived from the Delphinium elatum species (that also gave birth to the famous "Pacific Giant" series). This hardy annual rapidly forms a 34 to 40 cm wide tuft. In summer, 1.20 m high flower spikes emerge over deeply-cut, light green palmate leaves. Flowers appear from June to September and are very popular with pollen-gathering insects. The simple flower cups are gathered on large erect spikes. They bear a row of white petals dappled with lavender blue, over a second row of deeper blue petals. The plant emerges from a woody rhizome that burrows vertically into the ground.

The delphinium's unmistakable silhouette always brings volume, verticality and charm to perennial plant beds. The ‘Fancy Purple Picotee’ cultivar is the perfect choice to quickly add cottage-like elegance to your garden. Plant it alongside moss or gallica roses, soft orange day lilies or 'Rosenschleier' baby's breath for even more charm and romance. This variety is brilliant for cut flowers as it's blooms are remarkably long-lasting.

Planting and care

Delphinium Fancy Purple Picotee seeds can be sown directly outside, from April to May, in full sunlight, in light, fertile, well drained and well loosened soil. Bury the fine seeds in small holes about 6 mm deep and 30 cm apart. Water regularly to keep the soil moist, especially during dry spells. Germination generally takes 14 to 21 days. When the seedlings are strong enough to handle, thin them out by only keeping one plant every 15 cm. For earlier flowering, sow the Delphinium seeds from August to October in 7.5 cm pots in moist, good quality soil. Place the pots in a cold frame or cover them with a plastic bag at a temperature of 15-20°C until they germinate. Once the seedlings are strong enough, move them to a cooler place. Overwinter the plants in a cool, bright, frost-free place and water them sparingly. Transplant them to their final location the following spring. Water regularly until the plants are fully established. When they reach about 10 cm in height, support them with sturdy bamboo canes or sticks. Deadhead regularly to encourage new blooms. Delphiniums like sunny locations, sheltered from strong winds, with fertile, well-amended and well-drained soil.
