As for the dwarf coreopsis, I had a rather low germination rate, very low indeed. Otherwise, lovely little flower but doesn't reach 5 cm (2in) in size.

Description

The Elegant Roulette Coreopsis, bears the Latin name Coreopsis tinctoria Roulette or Calliopsis Tinctoria Roulette. It is an annual plant remarkable for the original color of its flowers: mahogany brown with yellow undersides. The compact and bushy habit of the plant (70 cm (27.6 in) tall by 30 cm wide) makes it suitable for planting in medium-height flower beds or in pots on the terrace and balcony.

The delicate and airy flowers borne on slender stems seem to hover in the wind above its light and vaporous foliage from June until the first frost.

With good vase life, a few flowering stems will blend ideally with Cosmos, Zinnias, Centaureas, etc. to create magnificent summer bouquets.

The ecological gesture:
By sowing Coreopsis in your garden, you will attract pollinating insects and other beneficial insects, enticed by the scent of their flowers' nectar. This will improve the health of your garden ecosystem, which will be particularly important in obtaining numerous fruits and vegetables. So plant a few plants near your vegetable garden.

Planting and care

Sow Coreopsis in February-March in a seed tray. Use good quality soil, possibly enriched with compost. Sow your seeds by broadcasting them. Cover the seeds by sprinkling soil on top or vermiculite, lightly press down and water generously with a fine rain. Place your pots in light, without direct sunlight, at a temperature of 20 to 25°C.

The seeds will germinate in 21 to 30 days. As soon as the plants reach a height of 10cm (3.9 in), transplant them into buckets. 15 days before their final placement, start gradually acclimating them to a temperature of 15°C.

By the end of May or early June, the temperature in the garden will be warm enough to plant your young plants. Choose a sunny location. Add a good bucketful of compost to each planting hole. Space your plants 25 to 30cm (11.8 in) apart.

It is possible to sow Coreopsis directly in the garden, but you will have to wait until the risk of frost is no longer a concern, around mid-May.

By removing faded flowers, you will promote renewal and prolong their duration.
