Description
Snapdragon F1 'Rocket Mix' (Antirrhinum majus) is a highly decorative hybrid variety, known for its strong, upright flower spikes in vibrant colours. Grown as an annual, particularly for cut flowers, this variety excels in beds and large borders where it flowers from summer until the first frosts. It is easy to cultivate in well-drained soil, in full sun, and it flowers 12 weeks after sowing.
Belonging to the Plantaginaceae family, the Snapdragon F1 'Rocket Mix' is a horticultural variety of the common snapdragon, also known by the common names lion's mouth, garden snapdragon, or large-flowered snapdragon. Native to the Mediterranean basin, particularly the south of France, the eastern Pyrenees, and north-eastern Spain, the species (Antirrhinum majus) is found naturally in the rocky and sunny areas of these regions.
Although a perennial in its native habitat, the snapdragon is generally cultivated as an annual due to its sensitivity to frost.
The 'Rocket F1 series', developed by PanAmerican Seed, is a hybrid cultivar selected for its vigour, heat tolerance, and uniform flowering. This series is distinguished by its dense, upright flower spikes, reaching 75 to 90 cm in height in open ground, with a spread of 30 to 45 cm. In pots, the height is reduced, varying between 40 and 60 cm depending on the container size. The flowers, arranged in tight clusters, feature a tubular corolla with two lips, resembling an open mouth when squeezed from the sides. Their colour palette is vast: red, pink, yellow, white, orange, bronze, and many other shades. Flowering extends from June-July to October, depending on the sowing date. It attracts a multitude of pollinators, particularly bumblebees, which can open the flower's lips to access the nectar. The flowers are slightly fragrant. After flowering, the plant produces capsules containing numerous small seeds. The foliage is composed of simple, lanceolate to ovate, medium green leaves measuring between 3 and 7 cm long. The vegetation dies back in winter in regions where the plant is grown as an annual.
Snapdragon F1 'Rocket Mix' easily finds a place in sunny beds where it adds height and vibrant colours. It is superb as a background to highlight lower perennials such as easy-to-grow hardy geraniums or lady's mantle, and pairs charmingly with short ornamental grasses or cosmos in a natural and abundant garden. In pots, on an open terrace, it pairs very well with annual lobelias or petunias, for fresh summer compositions. It can also be planted in small patches in a cottage garden, in a warm-toned or pastel monochrome, depending on the desired effect. It provides structure without being heavy, and works well in bold combinations.
Warning: seeds reserved for experienced gardeners accustomed to sowing very fine seeds. These seeds are as fine as dust, barely visible to the naked eye.

Planting and care
Sow Antirrhinum majus Rocket Mix from January to March on the surface of a well-drained seed compost. Do not cover the seeds. Place in a propagator or tray inside a plastic bag, maintaining a temperature of 20-25°C until germination, which usually takes 10 to 21 days. Light aids germination. Transplant the young plants when they are large enough to handle into 8 cm trays or pots. Gradually acclimatise the plants to cooler conditions over a few weeks before planting them out in the open ground after all risk of frost has passed, spacing them 23 to 30 cm apart.
Snapdragons thrive in fertile, well-drained, loose soil and full sun. The common snapdragon is not very hardy (-6/-7°C), so it is often grown as an annual or biennial. However, it is not uncommon for snapdragons to survive several mild winters, though they may become more susceptible to rust... To try and preserve a beautiful variety, protect the plants from severe frost in winter by ensuring good soil drainage and covering the crowns with a thick layer of leaves or dry herbs: they will regrow in spring and flower earlier.
