Description

Lobularia maritima or Alyssum odorata 'Giga White', also known as Sweet Alyssum, is an annual ground cover plant, highly appreciated for its long-lasting flowering and prized for pot plantings, hanging baskets, or borders, as it tirelessly blooms for several months. Vigorous, it has a tendency to cascade from a pot placed at a height. Moreover, this flowering emits a honey fragrance, which attracts numerous pollinators. 'Giga White' is covered from June to October with delicate flowering, pure and brilliant white, in clusters of fluffy flowers.

Alyssum odorata or Lobularia maritima is an annual plant belonging to the family of Brassicaceae, like mustard and rapeseed. It is native to southern Europe and the Mediterranean region. It has many attractions, which is why it is often seen cascading from hanging baskets and adorning borders. Its simple sowing allows for the rapid growth of an annual plant with woody-based herbaceous clumps, dense and prostrate, with a compact and rounded habit, completely covered with flowers, like round and white cushions, 15cm (6in) in height and 25cm (10in) in width. Its small foliage is glaucous green, narrow, and villous. Flowering extends from June to September, completely covering the plant with white flowers with a honey fragrance.

Sweet alyssums appreciate a sunny exposure, in any well-drained soil. They can be installed throughout the garden: in rockeries, on walls, and in containers to add a touch of volume. You can sow them directly in place, broadcast, as soon as the temperatures are mild or start them under cover to then use them in all your compositions in pots or containers. Very floriferous and requiring no maintenance, they are perfect plants to cover the top of walls or spaces between stones in rockeries, at the base of perennials and shrubs in dry soil, such as rosemary, sage, lavender, or rockroses. In pots or planters, they pair well with Surfinias or Calibrachoas. They effectively cover the edges of flower beds and pots for a season and happily mix with other annuals. As an effective ground cover, it is wise to plant it with plants with a vertical habit that it covers well at the base.

Planting and care

The 'Giga White' Sweet Alyssum is best sown under cover in a seed tray from March onwards. If frost is still persistent in your region, wait until April. The seeds will prefer temperatures around 18°C (64.4°F). Just cover the seeds with a thin layer of compost and keep it slightly moist. The seeds will germinate in about fifteen days. When the young plants are big enough to be moved, you can separate them and place them in containers if the frost period is not over and keep them warm. Otherwise, you can plant them directly in the ground. You can also sow them directly in the garden from April, if your climate is mild, or in May if you still fear the cold. Once they have sprouted, you can thin out the plants if necessary.
