Sowing that germinated but had to be done too early as it became leggy. I will sow the remaining seeds later next year.

Description

Ageratum 'Blue Mink' is a very attractive annual that displays large, soft, fluffy clusters of periwinkle blue flowers all summer long. This popular variety is coveted by butterflies. It forms small dense clumps that are perfect at the front of beds, in borders and pots. Easy to grow in a sunny location, in cool soil.

Ageratum houstonianum 'Blue Mink' is a perennial, often grown as an annual, that belongs to the Asteraceae family and is native to Central America and the West Indies. It forms bushy, rounded cushions that measure 25-30 cm high and 20 cm wide. The abundant, well-branched, pubescent stems stand upright and spread out gracefully. The dark bluish-green leaves, which are also pubescent, are ovate to triangular with serrated margins. From April until early autumn, this variety will bloom continuously providing it is regularly deadheaded. The foliage is smothered in soft, fuzzy lavender-blue flowerheads, grouped in pompom-like clusters.

Mexican Ageratums are pollinator-friendly plants that are popular in urban landscaping and gardens. Their generous blooms and bright colours combine well with many other low-growing bedding plants such as marigolds, calendulas and red sage. Create magnificent pastel-coloured carpets at the forefront of beds by matching them with pink begonias, busy Lizzies or fragrant alyssums. Ageratums are also very pretty grown alongside fuchsias in pots indoors, on the patio or balcony.

Planting and care

Sow in moist, free-draining sowing mix. Do not cover the seeds as they need sufficient light to germinate. To speed up the process, grow in a propagator or place the seed tray inside a polyethylene bag until germination (7-21 days at a temperature of 20-30°C).

When the plants are strong enough to handle, transplant them into pots and move them to a cooler place until they are ready to taken outdoors. When the young plants are well established and all risk of frost is over, harden them off for a few days before planting them in their final location. Make sure to leave about 30 cm between each plant.
