Beautiful little plant, the first batch I bought died right away. I didn't get discouraged and bought another one the following season: the little flowers were incredibly delicate, really pretty, but then within 1 week, without frost, without water, without anything special, they lost all their leaves. I think they have (once again) passed away. Very fragile indeed and expensive to make it an annual plant.

Description

Campanula cochlearifolia 'Elizabeth Oliver', also known as delicate bellflower, is well-known among alpine plant enthusiasts. It is a true botanical gem. This excellent ground-covering plant for rock gardens spreads through running and branching rhizomes. In summer, it reveals delicate, powder-blue, very double flowers on slender stems, resembling tiny and extremely delicate roses.

Campanula cochlearifolia belongs to the family of campanulaceae. It is native to the Alps, where it grows in limestone scree. 'Elizabeth Oliver' is a double-flowered selection developed in England in the 1970s. It is a low-growing plant, reaching about 5 to 12 cm (5in) high, with a spread of 20 cm (8in), spreading through stolons to form large patches over time. It blooms from June to August, with pale blue bell-shaped flowers, 12 to 20 mm (1in) long, pendulous, often facing the same direction, arranged in a cyme. The deciduous foliage is dark green, with heart-shaped basal leaves visible during flowering, and lanceolate leaves on the stems. This plant does not produce seeds, as the reproductive organs are transformed into petals, as is often the case with double-flowered plants.

Campanula cochlearifolia 'Elizabeth Oliver' prefers cool, light, even limestone, soils that are slightly damp but well-drained. It dislikes stagnant moisture, which can cause root rot. It requires well-drained soil that is slightly moist to thrive. It can be planted in non-scorching sunlight or partial shade, sheltered from strong winds that can dry it out. This mountain plant does not tolerate overly hot climates or nights with high temperatures.

This lovely perennial ground-covering plant which is primarily suited for moist rock gardens. It will quickly fill cracks in paving, old walls, and stone walls. It also fits perfectly in a wild garden. It adapts well to being grown in troughs or pots, in light and well-drained substrate.
