More information

An extremely decorative variety of Rocky Mountain Juniper with its blue-silver foliage all year round. Its very architectural conical habit makes it a choice subject for contemporary gardens. Reaching a height of 4m (13ft 1in) and more, this conifer grows in neutral to limestone soil and in sunny exposure. Very hardy, it only requires a little moisture to grow well, adapting very well to the majority of gardens.

Description

Juniperus scopulorum 'Wichita Blue' is a sculptural conifer derived from the Rocky Mountain juniper, also known as the Virginia juniper. Of medium size, it rises in a conical shape to form a magnificent blue-silver subject. Slow to medium growing, it is a conifer that grows in neutral to limestone soil, not too dry, and in full sun. Its aesthetic appearance makes it suitable for integration into a contemporary or mineral garden, where its unique shape and colour will be highlighted.

Juniperus scopulorum is an evergreen conifer belonging to the Cupressaceae family, which includes related species such as cypresses and Chamaecyparis. It is native to North America, in a vast area ranging from Alberta to Texas, where it grows at altitudes above 1500 m (4921ft 4in). It is therefore a robust and very hardy mountainous species, but it fears wind, excessively humid climates and soils, as well as excessively dry and hot atmospheres. In its natural environment, it has a cypress-like appearance. This species appreciates well-drained, even rocky soils and is not afraid of the presence of limestone in the soil.

The 'Wichita Blue' juniper forms a beautiful bush after 10 years with a conical shape swelled at the base, about 3.50 to 4m (11ft6 in to 13ft 1in) tall and 1.5m (4ft 11in) wide. Its growth is slightly slower than that of the species. In favourable conditions, it can reach a height of 5 to 6m (16ft 5in to 19ft 8in) with age. Its foliage consists of non-prickly, tightly packed scales, with a blue to silver colour. Its branches are very dense, which increases its aesthetic appeal, as few plants have foliage of this particular colour, except for certain Eucalyptus or "Mimosas" (Acacia). Junipers have a shallow root system that makes them fragile in the face of strong winds and difficult to associate with perennials. Juniperus scopulorum tolerates transplantation well.

The 'Wichita Blue' juniper is a hardy and elegant conifer widely planted in gardens for many years. It will be adopted without reservation in the garden for its perfect habit and density. It thrives everywhere, except in excessively arid or humid situations. Due to its slow growth, it works wonders when planted alone, on a slope, in a large rock garden, in the curve of a path, or in association with other plants in a mixed border. This conifer naturally fits into the design of a contemporary garden, which prefers the aesthetics of shapes, silhouettes, and textures over the dance of flowers. It can be happily paired with other colourful conifers, such as its cousin the 'Gold Kissen' Juniper with a low spreading habit and yellow foliage, for a double contrast of shape and colour. It will also make a high-class combination with the 'Black Lace' Elderberry, wider than it is tall, and especially with nearly black purple foliage.

Planting and care

Juniperus scopulorum 'Wichita Blue' should be planted from September to November and from February to April in well-drained, light, even limestone and poor soil. It is not bothered by rocky or sandy soil that is occasionally dry. However, it struggles in Mediterranean climates as well as in very humid climates and heavy soils. Choose a very sunny location sheltered from prevailing winds that could uproot it. Soak the root balls well before planting. Add organic amendment at planting and water generously in the first few years. Apply a special conifer fertilizer every year in April and cultivate the soil in summer. This conifer is very hardy and well-suited to montane climates. Pruning is unnecessary or kept to a minimum. Old wood, devoid of needles, rarely regrows.
