Description

The Fuchsia magellanica Riccartonii is the hardiest of fuchsias, it can withstand temperatures as low as -10, or even -15°C (5 °F) in a sheltered position.

It displays its adorable elongated bells of 3cm (1.2 in) for much of the summer, sometimes until October, a remarkable flowering period in terms of duration and abundance. Its brightly colored flowers stand out beautifully against its foliage.

With a bushy habit, it can reach over 1.20m (3 ft 11 in) in height after a few years, and can be used as a low hedge or a background plant in a border. In very mild regions, it will be evergreen and behave as a woody climbing stem, reaching a height of over 2m (6 ft 7 in).

If you choose to grow it in a pot, to extend the flowering period simply bring it indoors into a greenhouse or conservatory before the first frosts.

Planting and care

Planting Fuchsia magellanica Riccartonii in well-drained soil will improve the hardiness of the root ball. Adding compost and potting soil at the time of planting is a plus. You can replenish the compost in the spring. Make sure to water your bush well during the first year. In subsequent years, only water if there is a severe summer drought, as the Riccartonii fuchsia requires little maintenance. To withstand the harshness of winter, it is advisable in colder regions to prune them very short before the first frost and protect the stump of your Fuchsia with dead leaves or straw held in place by a winter cover. In other regions, it is best to plan for fuchsia pruning: remove old wood in early spring.
