Description

The Coleus canina, sometimes called the anti-cat plant, is a perennial herbaceous plant from the Lamiaceae family. The very distinct smell emitted by its leaves is reputed to repel dogs and cats. It can be grown in the ground as an annual or in a pot to be stored during winter. Planting can be done all year round, preferably in spring or autumn.

The Coleus canina belongs to the Lamiaceae family, just like mint. It flowers in the summer with spikes of erect lavender-blue flowers. The pale green leaves emit a strong odor, known to repel dogs and cats.

This repellent plant is ideally placed near high traffic areas, at the edge of flower beds or near the vegetable garden. It has a bushy habit, reaching a height of 50 cm (20in) and a width of 60 cm (24in). It thrives in full sun or partial shade, in rich and well-drained soil. However, it is not very hardy and needs protection from the cold. Therefore, it can be planted either in the ground, where it will be grown as an annual, or in a pot, to be stored during winter.

Note: Please be aware that our plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, repot and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once the risk of frost has definitively passed.

Planting and care

The Coleus canina can be planted either in the ground, where it will be grown as an annual, or in a pot, to be stored indoors during winter. The plant is not very hardy and is sensitive to negative temperatures. Planting in a pot can be done throughout the year, ideally in spring or autumn. In the ground, plant in the month of May.

In the ground: choose a sunny or partially shaded location. The Coleus canina thrives in rich, well-drained soil. Dig a hole (3 times the volume of the root ball), place the root ball, and cover with soil. Firmly press down and water to keep the soil moist.

If you are growing Coleus canina in a pot, remember to bring it indoors before winter frosts and place it in a bright location.

Water regularly throughout the cultivation. Trim the flowers to maintain a compact habit.
