Description

Viburnum carlesii 'Juddii' jhas a rounded and bushy habit, with dark green deciduous pubescent foliage that turns to splendid red shades in autumn. It displays pink buds during winter, which open into round clusters of small white flowers from April to May. It produces a generous and highly scented flowering reminiscent of the intoxicating smell of orange blossom. This hardy bush grows in any ordinary moist soil, without excess of limestone, in full sun or partial shade. It is highly valued for its double interest: beautiful spring flowering and dazzling autumnal colours of copper-brown. Its fruit attracts birds.

Viburnum carlesii offers a deliciously scented flowering among the viburnums. This Korean bush forms a rounded young plant measuring 1.5 to 2m (5 to 7ft) with ovate, pointed, finely dentate and villous foliage on the underside, which renews itself in spring. In April-May, the small flowers grouped in white spheres of 5 to 7cm (2 to 3in) in diameter emit a powerful orange blossom scent. 'Juddii' buds are tinted with pink that whiten as they open, displaying a subtle range of colours that stands out perfectly against its dark foliage. This deciduous bush adorns itself with flamboyant red colours in autumn before losing its leaves. The flowers are followed in September-October by spherical clusters of red then black fruits when ripe, prolonging the ornamental interest throughout part of the winter.

Hardy up to -20°C (-4°F), Viburnum carlesii 'Juddii' can be used as a standalone to attract attention in small gardens or as a hedge. Plant in beds in larger gardens. Its inflorescences can be used to make bouquets. Consider planting it in a high-traffic area to fully enjoy its scent, for example under a window or near a door.

Planting and care

Hardy down to -20°C (-4°F), Viburnum carlesii 'Juddii' thrives in sunny or semi-shaded positions. Plant it in moist but well-drained soil. Depending on your soil type, adjust its pH with compost as it won't tolerate excessive limestone. During its establishment, ensure good regular watering (except during freezing periods) and mulch the soil in spring. Viburnums are sometimes infested with black bean aphids (Aphis fabae), a parasite that also overwinters on Euonymus and is a vector of Cucumber Mosaic Virus, causing a serious mosaic disease. Leaf beetle sometimes ravages the leaves. Powdery mildew, rot, and foliar spots can also affect viburnums.
