Description
Louisiana irises are robust hybrids born from cross-breeding between wild species growing in the marshes of Louisiana such as I. brevicarlis, I. fulva, I nelsonii etc. Depending on the dominance of species, they are more or less cold-resistant and more or less vigorous, reaching up to 1.50m (5ft) for the tallest ones. In their native habitat, these irises are considered water or marsh edge irises, but they tolerate being planted in a flowerbed as long as the soil remains moist.
The 'Gulf Shores' variety is small, not more than 75 cm (30in) high, but has large, flat, very bright violet-blue flowers and it is very hardy.

The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:
- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
